| Oak Harbor girls beat Huron |
|
The Oak Harbor varsity girls’ basketball team earned a hard-fought 41-38 victory over Huron on Jan. 30. Senior Sara Lipstraw led the way for the Lady Rockets scoring 16 points and dishing out three assists. After a nip-and-tuck first quarter, Oak Harbor managed to take a one-point lead, 19-18, at halftime. The second half was more of the same, but the Rockets outscored the Tigers 15-13 over the final 8 minutes. In that final quarter, Lipstraw scored seven points, including three for three at the free throw line. She also had the Rockets only three-point goal, coming in the second quarter. “It was a game between two teams that wanted to win badly,” Oak Harbor coach Dick Heller said. “Both teams went after each other the whole game. “Every time we got a lead, Huron answered and tied it or went ahead. We would then answer the same way. Fortunately, we answered at the end and got the win. Huron played a great game,” he said. Oak Harbor improved to 6-8 overall, 6-5 in the Sandusky Bay Conference with the victory. Rounding out scoring for the Rockets was Kayla Diefenthaler with eight points, Allison Dunn had six points, Rachel Hegemier scored four points, Lauren Adams had three points and led her team with six rebounds and Abby Zurvalec and co-captain Erica Mauder each scored two points. The Rockets made 16 of 44 shots from the field (34 percent) and were eight of 11 (73 percent) from the free throw line. The Rockets were out rebounded by Huron, 25 to 19, and the Rockets as a team dished out 13 assists to Huron’s 10. But Oak Harbor committed only five turnovers to Huron’s 14. For Huron, Lauren Volz scored 12 points, Devon Koenig had seven points, Sierra Ward had six points, Alexis Lemar added five points, Devon Grendow scored four points, and Melissa Moberg and Caroline Estel each scored two points. Volz and Koenig each had a trey, with both coming in the highly contentious fourth quarter. The Lady Rockets will take their two game win streak on the road next Saturday, Feb. 6 when they travel to Clyde to play the Lady Fliers. The JV game will begin at 1 p.m. The make-up date for the girls game versus Eastwood cancelled on Jan. 7 is Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.
