Rockets come back to defeat Chargers

The Oak Harbor boys’ basketball team had a huge victory Friday: After losing to Edison by 21 earlier in the season, the Rockets came back strong and defeated the Chargers by a score of 64-57.
The first time the two teams met, the Chargers took a 70-49 victory. The win Friday, coupled with a 58-55 loss to a very good Eastwood team Saturday night, put the Rockets record at 4-11 overall, 3-7 in the Sandusky Bay Conference heading into this Friday night’s SBC contest at Huron (7-6, 6-4). Edison is 8-7 overall, 3-7 in the SBC.
In the win over Edison, the first quarter saw a close game which ended with the Rockets taking a one point lead, 13-12. They still had the one-point lead at halftime, 28-27.
But in the second half, Oak Harbor outscored the Chargers 36-27 to even the season series between the two teams.
Brandon Wasserman scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to lead the late offensive onslaught by Oak Harbor. He had two three-point goals in the final 8 minutes, plus made four-of-five free throws. For the game, he was seven-of-eight from the charity stripe and finished with 17 points.
As a team, Oak Harbor had 16 chances at the free throw line in the final quarter alone, making nine. The Rockets were 14-of-21 for the game, making every single chance leading up to the final quarter.
Jake Scott had 15 points for Oak Harbor, including four treys. He had two treys in the first quarter and one each in the second and third quarters. As a team, Oak Harbor connected on 10 three-point goals.
Also getting treys were Zack Priesman, whose three treys accounted for all nine of his points. Kevin Young had one trey which contributed to his 11 point total, plus he led the Rockets with 11 rebounds.
Guard D.J. Everett scored six points for Oak Harbor and Steve Young, guard Andrew Karsten and Kevin Lipstraw each scored two points.           
In the loss to Eastwood, Jake Scott scored 16 points and Wasserman added 11 for Oak Harbor. Eastwood’s Clayton Ruch scored a game-high 22 points.
Oak Harbor led 18-16 after one quarter, but the Eagles came back to take a 27-23 lead at halftime. Entering the final quarter, the Eagles lead had expanded to eight points, 45-37.
But Scott and Steve Young each hit a three-point goal in the fourth quarter as the Rockets took a last minute run at the Eagles.
Scott ended the game with five treys, including two each in the first and third quarters. Steve Young had two treys, and Wasserman and Kevin Young each had one. For the game, the Rockets closed with nine treys.
Kevin Young finished the game with nine points, Everett had eight points, Steve Young seven points and Lipstraw had four points for the Rockets. The Rockets were 8-of-11 from the free throw line.
Huron, the Rockets SBC opponent this Friday, has been a mostly low-scoring, defensive-minded team, earning wins over Edison (62-55), Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic (52-48), Perkins (43-31), Norwalk St. Paul (45-40), Margaretta (41-39), Edison (40-37) and SMCC a second time (72-53).
Tiger losses have been to Bellevue (46-43), Vermilion (59-53), the Rockets in their first meeting (48-43), Port Clinton (66-49), Clyde (59-53) and Perkins (56-35).
