Charles “Chuck” Barkley Plato, 76, of Marblehead, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon, March 27, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky. Chuck was born on August 22, 1937 in Lorain, and lived along the lakefront most of his life. He attended St. Mary’s High School and joined the Naval Reserve Surface Division 4-105 in Lorain where he proudly served until 1962.
In the 60’s and 70’s, he owned Plato’s Poodle Palace and became active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was Division 9 Captain and Flotilla 9-11 Commander. After earning his Master 100-ton Captain’s License, Chuck worked on the Miss Majestic Charter Boat as Auxiliary Captain and First Mate. His working career ended as Maintenance Manager for Spitzer Plaza Hotel. After his retirement in 2008, he moved to Marblehead.
His hobbies included fishing, boating, Lake Erie history, model boat building, and tending to his beloved pets. Chuck was an early riser and took every chance to meet friends for coffee. After moving to Marblehead, his coffee hangout became The Peninsula, where they dubbed him President of the Coffee Club.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Judith A. (Prochazka) Plato; beloved daughter, Kimberly A. Plato Merkle; son-in-law, Christopher A. Merkle; step-grandson, Joshua C. Merkle; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul L. Plato; mother, Lucille (Barkley) Plato; sisters, Patricia King and Joan Donnar; and brother, Mort Plato. He will be missed by all his family and friends.
A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 309 W. 7th St., Lorain, OH 44052. Visitation and Celebration of Life will follow from 12-4 p.m. on Saturday at the Black River Landing Depot, 421 Black River Ln., Lorain.
