Stella Ruth MacDonald Mar. 1, 1929-Apr. 4, 2014

Stella Ruth MacDonald, 85 of Lakeside, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday, April 4, at Otterbein North Shore Retirement Center, Jane Baker House, Lakeside. She was born on March 1, 1929. 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 15, from 10 a.m. until a celebration of Stella's life Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at Lakeside United Methodist Church, 450 Central Avenue, Lakeside, with Pastor Vern Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow at Sackett Cemetery in Danbury Township.

Helen Mae Hess Sept. 11, 1920-Apr. 2, 2014

Helen Mae Hess, 93, of Parma Heights, passed away, Wednesday, April 2, at St. John Medical Center, Westlake, surrounded by her loving family. Helen was born on September 11, 1920 in Oak Harbor, the daughter of James and Edith (Fleckner) Hess.  Helen worked as a secretary for the Ohio Department of Transportation for 30 years until her retirement in 1984. She was a former member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star Chapter #267 of Port Clinton.  Helen will be greatly missed by her loving family and friends.

Survivors include: Daughter: Ann Eurenius of Parma Heights, Grandchildren: Megan & Erin Eurenius; Nieces: Sally Walker, Lynn Marlott and Julie Simon.  Helen was preceded in death by her parents and sister: Harriett DeWitt.

Visitation was 5-7 p.m., Sunday, April 6, at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton.  Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, April 7, in the funeral home.  Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton.  Memorial donations in memory of Helen may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association, 23215 Commerce Park #300, Cleveland, OH  44122.  Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.walkerfuneralhomes.com.

Martha M. Soski Mar. 19, 1922-Apr. 2, 2014

Martha M. Soski, 92, of Bellevue and formerly of Port Clinton passed away Wednesday, April 2, at the Bellevue Care Center, Bellevue, surrounded by her loving family.  She was born March 19, 1922 in Kalida, OH, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Kamhaus) Schnipke.

Charles “Chuck” Barkley Plato Aug. 22, 1937-Mar. 27, 2014

Charles “Chuck” Barkley Plato, 76, of Marblehead, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon, March 27, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky. Chuck was born on August 22, 1937 in Lorain, and lived along the lakefront most of his life. He attended St. Mary’s High School and joined the Naval Reserve Surface Division 4-105 in Lorain where he proudly served until 1962.

In the 60’s and 70’s, he owned Plato’s Poodle Palace and became active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was Division 9 Captain and Flotilla 9-11 Commander. After earning his Master 100-ton Captain’s License, Chuck worked on the Miss Majestic Charter Boat as Auxiliary Captain and First Mate. His working career ended as Maintenance Manager for Spitzer Plaza Hotel. After his retirement in 2008, he moved to Marblehead.    

His hobbies included fishing, boating, Lake Erie history, model boat building, and tending to his beloved pets. Chuck was an early riser and took every chance to meet friends for coffee. After moving to Marblehead, his coffee hangout became The Peninsula, where they dubbed him President of the Coffee Club. 

Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Judith A. (Prochazka) Plato; beloved daughter, Kimberly A. Plato Merkle; son-in-law, Christopher A. Merkle; step-grandson, Joshua C. Merkle; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul L. Plato; mother, Lucille (Barkley) Plato; sisters, Patricia King and Joan Donnar; and brother, Mort Plato. He will be missed by all his family and friends. 

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 309 W. 7th St., Lorain, OH 44052. Visitation and Celebration of Life will follow from 12-4 p.m. on Saturday at the Black River Landing Depot, 421 Black River Ln., Lorain.  

The family requests donations to be made in lieu of flowers to Stein Hospice Service, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870 or to Humane Society of Ottawa County, 2424 E. Sand Rd., Port Clinton, OH 43452. Condolences and words of sympathy may be made to the family by visitingwww.toftfh.com.
