Alois David Capko, 81, of Port Clinton, passed away, Wednesday, February 12, at H. B. Magruder Hospital.  David was born on September 16, 1932 in Lakeside, the son of Joseph and Clara (Boytim) Capko.

Ronald E. Verhoff, 73, of Marblehead, died Thursday, April 17, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky.  He was born November 25, 1940 in Bellevue, the son of the late William and Helen Louise (Eckler) Verhoff.

Herbert H. Lueke July 23, 1918-April 17, 2014

Herbert H. Lueke, 95, of Port Clinton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Riverview Healthcare Campus, Oak Harbor. On his last day, when daughter Pat asked if he was scared, Herb said, “There is nothing to be afraid of.”

Herb was born July 23, 1918, in Woodville, the son of Frederick J. and Rica (Finn) Lueke.  On July 28, 1945, in Edmonton, Canada, Herb married Margery A. Welsh and she preceded him in death in 1983.  He remarried on May 6, 1984, in Port Clinton, to Joyce E. Russell and she also preceded him in death in 1994.  

Herb worked as an electrician and welder at Martin-Marietta in Woodville for over 40 years, retiring in 1984.  He was a veteran who served in the Army Air Corps during WWII.  Herb was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Port Clinton, and a lifetime member and past commander of American Legion Post #455 of Woodville, member of the church council at Solomon Lutheran Church in Woodville, lifetime member and past commodore of Nugent’s Canal Yacht Club, and a past commodore of the International Blue Gavel.  He also enjoyed attending the men’s prayer breakfast at Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Clinton, woodworking, gardening, fishing, and the Detroit Tigers. His quiet strength, dependability, positive attitude, good humor, and gift for graciously accepting whatever challenges came his way endeared Herb to his family and many friends.

Survivors include: daughters: Donna Lueke of Marblehead and Dr. Patricia (Michael) Van Kley of Perrysburg; son: Richard (Beth Ann) Lueke of Bradner; stepdaughters Vicki (Lynn) Martin and Jacque Russell, both of Denver, CO; niece Marita McKeehan; grandchildren Alicia Lueke, Mikaela (Adam) Uhlman, Megan (Thomas) Conrad and Misty Hannigan; step grandchildren: Dr. Ted (Dr. Jennifer) Norman, Mark (Keira) Norman, Dr. Wendy Norman, Daniel Van Meter and Christopher Van Meter; great-grandchildren Ava and Alice Uhlman and Kaylee Kern and 11 step great-children.  Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, wives and sisters, Edna McKeehan and Martha Lueke.

Visitation will be from 9 – 11 a.m. on Monday, April 21, at the Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, 216 Washington St, Port Clinton, where the funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m.  A Celebration of Life luncheon will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Nugent’s Canal Yacht Club, Port Clinton.  Graveside committal services will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Westwood Cemetery, Woodville, with military graveside honors.  Memorial contributions in memory of Herbert may be given to the Salvation Army or Peace Lutheran Church.  Online condolences may be shared with the family by visiting

Richard J. “Richie” Saponari Apr. 30, 1950-Apr. 11, 2014

Richard J. “Richie” Saponari, 63, of Catawba Island and formerly of the Cleveland area, died Friday, April 11, at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, OH.  He was born April 30, 1950, in Utica, NY, the son of Dominic and Helen (Radeschi) Saponari.  He is survived by his wife, Maureen “Moe” (Gutowski) Saponari, whom he married on July 17, 2005.

Richie founded and operated Century Limousine of Berea, OH, in the 1970’s and early 1980’s.  Richie and Maureen then started Dawg Pound Diners of North Royalton and Berea.  In 2005, they moved to Catawba Island and founded Richie’s Limo.

Richie founded The Ohio Limousine Owner’s Association, which was instrumental in regulating limousine companies.  After moving to Catawba Island, he created and founded Island Idol and Seniors Gone Wild.  He was also the head of security for Mon Ami Restaurant and Winery.

Richie lived his life to the fullest every day of his 63 years.  His love for his wife and family was insurmountable.  His magnetic personality, compassion and generosity blessed many people throughout his life.

Surviving are his wife, Maureen “Moe” Saponari;  sons, Anthony V. Gutowski of Cleveland, R. J. Saponari of North Royalton; daughter, Ashley A. Saponari of North Royalton; mother, Helen Saponari of Brookpark; brothers, Robert G. (Carol) Saponari of Brookpark, OH, and Larry (Lori) Saponari of Boca Raton, FL.  He was preceded in death by his father, Dominic Saponari.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 16, from 1-4 p.m., at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton, where a short prayer service will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m., followed by a “Celebration of Richie’s Life” at Mon Ami Restaurant and Winery, Catawba Island.
