Perch fishing Lake Erie’s Western Basin

With this season’s perch fishing is firing up into full swing now, and I’d like to share a few tips with those who may be going out to try it for the first time. Hopefully, it will help you put more fish in your cooler.

Minnows: The emerald shiner, which is native to Lake Erie, and can be found in most of the bait shops in the area, is the best minnow for catching perch. While the golden shiner, can work in a pinch, if you present the emerald shiner and a golden shiner at the same time, the emerald shiner will out produce the golden every time.

Kids fishing derby at the Ottawa County Fair

Ottawa Soil & Water Conservation District and Oak Harbor FFA will be hosting the annual free youth fishing derby during the Ottawa County Fair on Sunday, July 20. All kids ages 12 and under are invited to participate in the fishing derby. The event will take place at the race track infield pond and will being promptly at the scheduled times for each group: 9-10 a.m. 0-5 years and 10:15-11:15 a.m. 6-12 years

Prizes will be awarded to the boys and girls of each class for the most fish caught (ties will be broken by weight), the largest fish caught (by weight) and the smallest fish caught (by weight). There is also a guaranteed prize for anyone that registers before July 16.

Phenomenal year for walleye fishing

I’m no expert, but I do believe that the heavy ice we had this past winter resulted in a very big shad kill. In turn, that removed a large portion of the walleye forage base. What does this mean? It means that walleye have been more eager to taste our offerings of painted metal, plastics, and live bait selections in an almost suicidal fashion.
