Students interested in environmental science and policy have a unique opportunity for a summer class: a three-week trip across the Great Lakes on the tall ship Brig Niagara, a replica of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s flagship from the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The course, which is offered as a partnership between Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory, Niagara University and Penn State University, will introduce students to hands-on lake science and Great Lakes policy issues while allowing them to experience life aboard an authentic wooden naval warship.

A new National Park Service report shows that approximately 92,000 visitors in 2010 spent approximately $7,150,000 in Perry’s Victory and in communities near the park. That spending supported 145 jobs in the local area.
“The people and the business owners in communities near national parks have always known their economic value,” said park Superintendent Blanca Alvarez Stransky. “Perry’s Victory is clean, green fuel for the engine that drives our local economy.”

The island’s first-ever radio station went on the air this morning, broadcasting Put-in-Bay news and a two-hour talk show with local islanders as guests.
WPIB, PutinBayRadio.com, signed-on at 6 a.m. from its new island studio in the PIB Chamber of Commerce offices.
The radio station is the only broadcast facility in Ohio to be headquartered on an island.
