Cut-a-thon to benefit local woman with ALS

The owner of a local salon has decided to donate some of her time for her sister-in-law in need. Salon 53 is holding a Cut-a-Thon to benefit Melissa Belcher, a Fremont woman diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in 2010. “One of the joys of being a business owner is being able to help out a worthy cause such as this,” said Brenda Belcher, owner of Salon 53. "We just celebrated our one year anniversary, and we were very successful, so we decided to give back."

Melissa is a 1990 graduate of Fremont Ross High School, and has been a teacher at Whitmer High School and Sylvania Northview High School. She and her husband Kelly have two sons, Grant, 10, and Aden, 4. In addition to her teaching duties, she enjoyed coaching volleyball at both of these schools. Her symptoms began while she was five months pregnant with her son, and since then, the disease has forced her to give up her teaching and coaching careers. The Cut-a-Thon will help offset the family’s high medical bills, which include in-home health care and frequent trips to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for specialized treatment.
