Port Clinton needs $6,000,000

Port Clinton is expected to come up with six million dollars according to Catawba resident Craig Trick who is representing Washington Properties for the proposed development at Waterworks Park. At the March 6 city council meeting council President Linda Hartlaub did not allow the public to ask questions, so I guess citizens are expected to make nice, keep our mouths shut and accept it. The chairman of city council’s Parks and Recreation Committee, Councilman Ron Aukerman, estimated that for $2,000,000 the park could be made into a destination to draw visitors. It appears that the rest of the $6,000,000 is to support the condos, hotel and retail space being proposed at the park. 

If the city can get $6,000,000 to enable a developer’s project, getting $2,000,000 to rehab the park for the residents should be a cakewalk! And, if they can get $6,000,000 for the development why didn’t they get $2,000,000 for the park in years past? What have they been waiting for? The answer may be that there are those in the community who wanted Waterworks Park to deteriorate and look as bad as possible so the citizens would support the condos, hotel and shops. 

We need a beautiful park AND downtown revitalization. Some negative individuals in the community want to give up the park to support the downtown. If you care about what’s happening at Waterworks Park, speak up! Tell your friends, neighbors, relatives and City Council. It’s not the CITY’s park – it’s the CITIZEN’s park. A word of caution - when you ask questions to City Council don’t accept a response of “trust me”. When it comes to Waterworks Park, we’ve heard “trust me” said so many times and in so many ways it boggles the mind.

Renovation of True Lay Stadium in the works

On Saturday, March 22, at the Fullbackers’ second annual Wild game Feed, the Port Clinton Athletic Complex Association announced its intension to renovate and revitalize True Lay Stadium from a football/track stadium to an Athletic Complex.  Co-Chair Tim Paradiso explained the project and goals that need to be reached to complete the complex project.  These renovations will benefit students and athletes of all ages in the Port Clinton School system. This will include, but is not limited to, soccer, football, track & field, cross county and expanding to Bataan School, the band and the community.  With the new complex, the school will be able to host more sporting events including several events under the lights.  Co-chairs Joe Brenner and Bill Lowe were also present.  At the front of the room, there was a display of renderings of projected design plan for the complex when completed. 

The new athletic complex will include a new field turf, dimensions and markings for a regulation soccer field, new 8-lane all-weather surface track with new black vinyl chain link fence, home and away bleachers for spectators, a new locker room, an expanded weight room, and new stadium lighting.  There will also be a new entrance and a new state-of-the-art press box.

An area will be designated near the side of the track and field to list the names of the contributors that donated to make this project possible.  There will also be special preserved areas, such as the flag pole at the far end of the stadium, will remain unchanged; as well as the name of the stadium.

Most of the funding for this $3 million project will be exclusively from private donations and sponsorships.  Fred Zink, a representative for the Fullbackers, was present to present a check in the amount of $175,000 to the PC Athletic Complex Association.  Also, the Port Clinton Athletic Booster President Rick Kokinda was present to present a check in the amount of $140,000. There are sponsorship opportunities for donors of all levels to contribute to the complex project.  

The overwhelming support from the Port Clinton City Schools and Administration has played a big part of this renovation.  Although the Port Clinton City Schools will not be funding any of the major renovations, the Board of Education will consider making improvements to the grandstand.

Overseeing the project will be Poggemeyer Design Group out of Bowling Green.  The projected completion of the renovations is the fall of 2015.  The ground breaking date has not been set yet but the project will be done in stages as not to conflict with any sporting events or school functions.

Paige Reinick, ICS Principal for a day

 

Fourth grader Paige Reineck was all smiles in the hallways Thursday morning as she greeted her students and prepared for her new position, Principal of Immaculate Conception School in Port Clinton (for a day, that is). Paige took to the PA system late in the day on Wednesday to announce the changes she would put into action for the next day. Her no uniforms policy delighted her classmates. In addition, the entire school was treated to pizza for lunch by Principal Reineck. After lunch, Paige felt it was time to relax. The entire student body was invited to the school gym (in their slippers) to watch the new movie Frozen.

Paige spent much of the day on Thursday helping her mentor, Mrs. Connie Snyder, with office tasks and principal duties. Being Principal for a Day was auctioned off at last year’s Immaculate Conception School auction. This year’s auction is April 26 and the theme is “Happy 90th Birthday ICS”, as the school embarks on celebrating its 90th year of providing a faith filled education in Port Clinton. Immaculate Conception School would be so grateful for any donation from the community for this year’s auction.
