Magruder’s Diabetes Program Earns National Recognition

Magruder Hospital’s Diabetes Self-Management Education Program recently renewed their certification for National Recognition by the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

The outpatient program, which requires a physician referral, offers patients the skills they need to better manage their diabetes on their own.

The ADA reviewed and evaluated Magruder’s program by the National Standards earning them National Recognition.  "It really assures us that the education we offer is the best it can be for our diabetic patients,” said Kathy Buckingham, RD, LD, CDE,  Magruder’s Director of Nutritional Services and coordinator of the program.

The ADA Education Recognition effort is a voluntary process which assures that approved education programs have met the National Standards. The program was originally awarded Education Recognition in September, 2007.

“We have a lot of patients who come in and are scared because they have just been diagnosed and aren’t sure of just how their life is going to change. They see our Nurse Diabetic Educator, Krista Jeffries, RN, CDE and myself and we are both Certified Diabetic Educators.  We help take away their fears and anxieties by giving them the tools they need to successfully manage diabetes on their own. This helps to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, and can cut down on acute and chronic complications,” said Buckingham.
