Local attends international Delta Kappa Gamma convention

Spokane Convention Center in Washington was the site of the International Convention of the 2010 Delta Kappa Gamma Society July 20-25. More than 1,400 women educators attended from 17 countries, including some from the newest country Panama which joined the society last year.
Twenty nine Ohio members attended including Edna Hansen, of Port Clinton, a member of the International Finance Committee and past Ohio treasurer. Hansen, member of Alpha Zeta Chapter, presided at two sessions for state treasurers and with the members of the Finance Committee presented a session on planned giving as a legacy.
Keynote speaker John F. Brock, CEO of the Coca Cola Company, stressed the value of leadership and how important an educated workforce is for his company, recognized by Newsweek as the No. 1 food and beverage company. Coca Cola gives several $100,000 scholarships each year. Another speaker was Chris Rants, a 28-year member of the Iowa State Legislature. He stressed that programs must be planned years ahead because the legislators do want to help education but they are having many money problems.
Amanda Gore from Australia used research to remind members of the power of positive thinking and environment, and how perception controls our beliefs as well as outcomes.
A $2,500 Educator’s Book Award went to Dr. Susan Blum for her book, “My Word! Plagarism and College Culture.” Her sessions were well attended.
New York City is the site of the 2012 convention.
