Change of Command for Port Security Unit 309 |
|
PORT CLINTON — Commander Gerald A. “Jerry” Nauert officially assumed command of Coast Guard Port Security Unit 309 from Karl S. Leonard at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26, during a change of command ceremony at the PSU 309 Facility, Lake Erie Industrial Park, Port Clinton. Nauert relieved Leonard as the eighth commanding officer of PSU 309 in a formal ceremony officiated by Capt. Mark S. Hemann, the Acting Deputy Commander, Deployable Operations Group.
The ceremony represented a total transfer of accountability from one individual to another. Leonard recently served as Commander, Task Unit UAE, 56.5.1 in Jebel Ali, Deputy Commander Task Group 56.5 in Kuwait and Deputy Planning Officer at Principal Federal Officer New Orleans following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. “One of the many things I am proud of at this unit is our mentorship program where we identify someone to personally handle any new member reporting in,” said Leonard. “You may not know what that means to that individual today but I assure you, years from now, it will have played an important role. I ask all of you to keep up that aspect of your duties and to look for opportunities to be a mentor and offer guidance and direction when you can.” Leonard also took time to thank the local residents. “I also want to recognize the Port Clinton community, government employees and all the local businesses from the area and a special thanks to Mayor Debbie Hymore-Tester for her unwavering support of this unit,” Leonard said. Nauert comes to PSU 309 from the Coast Guard Reserve Unit U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. There he served as Administrative Officer, Readiness Officer, Command Security Officer and Intelligence Branch Chief.
