Lake Erie Day at Boat Show

Visitors to the Progressive Mid-America Boat Show at Cleveland’s I-X Center can learn about some of the major issues facing Lake Erie Jan. 17–21 at the Ohio Sea Grant booth. Sea Grant experts will be available to discuss harmful algal blooms, invasive species, dead zones, and climate change, along with educational opportunities available at Stone Laboratory, Ohio State University’s Island Campus on Lake Erie.

Ontario fishing company fined $5,000 for illegally fishing in Ohio

Pisces Fisheries Inc. of Wheatley, Ontario, was fined $5,000 for fishing illegally in Ohio waters, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Pisces Fisheries was sentenced by the Ottawa County Municipal Court in Port Clinton on Dec. 21 by Magistrate Louis P. Wargo III.

“This was a great multi-agency response,” said Gino Barna, ODNR Division of Wildlife law supervisor for the Lake Erie Law Enforcement Unit. “Gill nets have not been a major issue on Lake Erie in recent years because of the cooperation with other agencies. Because of this support network, incidents like this do not go undetected, and Ohio’s resources are better protected.”

Liberty Tax office kicks off tax season

On New Year’s Eve at the Walleye Drop, to kick off the tax season, the Liberty Tax office’s Miss Liberty handed out Miss Liberty crowns and participants could register for a free tax drawing. Winners were Stacy Coci, Toledo; Bev Zuchowski, Rossford; Matt Grotz, Port Clinton; Kevin Foust, Oak Harbor; Matt Renz, Port Clinton; Crystal Bollings, Cleveland; and Ryan Chambers, Port Clinton.

Though e-filing does not begin until Jan. 30, the Port Clinton Liberty Tax office at 313 Harrison Street, 419-732-1776, is now open.
