NBOH promotes food drive

National Bank of Ohio, headquartered in Oak Harbor, has kicked off a “Cans 4 All” food drive campaign. NBOH wants to give back to the community by lending a helping hand to the local food bank. The theme “Feeding The Need In Our Communities; You Can Bank On It!” will be featured on their parade float at festivals in the area. The first parade will be in Oregon May 19h, followed by a parade in Port Clinton on May 25 and in Genoa May 31. They will then finish up the year at the Apple Festival Parade in Oak Harbor on October 12. The theme  is displayed on the float, in their banking offices and in other business locations in the community with large posters and bright yellow collection bags. 

The public is invited to stop by one of the displays, pick up a bag or two, fill it with non-perishable/canned food items and return it to one of the banking locations. Along the parade route bank employees will be passing out bright yellow collection bags for people to use to fill with candy from the parade, then to refill with a donation for the food bank to bring to one of the banking offices.

NBOH has been in business since 1934 and is an independently-owned provider of financial services to businesses and consumers. The Earthquakers will rock the tent at the Walleye Festival

2013 Compost Workshop

Composting is one form of recycling that can happen right in your backyard. Catawba Island Township, Sandusky County Park District, Ottawa County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste Management District are sponsoring a Compost Workshop on Wednesday, May 22nd. The Compost Workshop will demonstrate how composting yard waste, food scraps, and other organic materials are used to create a nutrient-rich soil conditioner for yard or garden. 

Pre-registration is required to attend one of two available sessions because of limited space. The pre-registration deadline is Tuesday, May 21. The first session will begin at 10 a.m. and the evening session will begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be a charge of $5 to participate.

Each year the workshop is sponsored in one of the District’s three counties. The 2013 workshop will be featured in Ottawa County at the Catawba Island Township building located at 4822 E. Cemetery Road, Port Clinton. The compost workshop is open to all District residents including all residents of Fostoria and Bellevue. 

“It doesn’t make any sense to throw away materials that can be turned into compost in your backyard,” said Tim Wasserman, Director of the Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Joint Solid Waste Management District.  "We want to offer these workshops to educate residents on the proper way to create and maintain a compost pile.”

The workshop will cover basic techniques and essentials of composting.  These aspects include the composting process, materials to place in your pile, common compost problems and other helpful information.

Registered participants will be put into a drawing to win composting and gardening door prizes.  In addition, participants will be provided with snacks and a tour of Catawba Island Township's compost area and Cedar Meadow Nature Preserve.

Trey Gluth to play baseball at Ohio Wesleyan

On Friday, May 10, Port Clinton Redskin senior Trey Gluth announced he will continue his education and baseball career at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. He will follow in the Ohio Wesleyan footsteps of other notable Redskins such as Jay Wierzba, Eric Heise and Matt Rhode.

At Port Clinton High School Gluth earned three varsity letters in baseball, was on the All Sandusky Bay Conference 1st Team in 2012 and played for Post 83 Sandusky Legion baseball team in 2012. In football, Gluth also earned 3 varsity letters, was honorable mention All-SBC in 2012 and on the SBC All-Academic team in 2012.

Gluth was on the PCHS Leadership Council, 2012 Homecoming Court, assisted with youth baseball clinics and worked as a freshman mentor and a volunteer with United Way’s summer lunch program. He plans to major in history/education at Ohio Wesleyan.

Summer activities at Port Clinton City Schools

The last day of school for Port Clinton City School District students is June 7. Even though students will no longer be in the classroom there are numerous summer activities taking place in the district. All the camp forms can be found on the district website www.pccsd.net under the Bulletin Board.

Champions for Children will once again be offering their Summer Enrichment Camps. There are nine one-week sessions beginning on June 17 and ending on August 16. The summer program offers child care from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. with after-camp care available until 6 p.m. Participants will enjoy a wide range of activities and interesting camp themes, all this at an affordable rate provided by an award-winning program. Port Clinton High School Coaches also offer a variety of summer camps and clinics: 

Redskin Boys Basketball Camp–June 11-14 in the PCHS Gym, 8:30 a.m.-noon, for boys entering grades 3-8. Registration cost is $40, two or more for $70. The camp is under the direction of Coach Troy Diels, who will be teaching the fundamentals of the game such as dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, defense and teamwork.

Redskin Girls Basketball Camp–June 17-20 in the PCHS Gym, for girls entering grades 4,5 or 6 from 8 until 10 a.m., grades 7-9 from 10 a.m. until noon. Cost is $25 for Grades 4-6; $30 for grades 7-9. The goal is for the girls to have fun while learning the great game of basketball. Under the direction of Coach Toby Bickel.

Soccer Camp-June 17-21. Coach Paco Romero will host special summer clinics for children in grades kindergarten through eight. Cost is $30 per student, $55 for two family members, $80 for three or more family members. Grades K-2 will be held from 3–4 p.m; Grades 3-5 will be from 4–5 p.m. and grades 6-8 from 5– 6:30pm. Volleyball Camps- June 12-14 in the new Middle School Gym. Cost is $30 per child (includes a t-shirt if registered by May 27).

Graduation is the first milestone on KC’s path to success

Kayla Leigh Davis, who prefers to be called KC, has an exciting month ahead of her. She is finishing her senior year at Port Clinton High School and will be graduating with the Class of 2013.

KC lives in Port Clinton with her mom, Cris Magrum, and her dog Lilly. She is active in the county REC program, with her church and is looking forward to the Williams Syndrome Walk in Perrysburg. As a member of the Williams Syndrome community, KC has been active in the Toledo area group activities and camps.

This year has been a successful one for KC as she received Merit Honor Roll status and has enjoyed her final year of school. According to KC the best part of senior year was reading “The Hunger Games” in senior English.

Her future plans include a third summer working with the Bridges to Transition program for teens. For the past two summers she had been placed at Otterbein Living, a senior care facility and retirement community in Lakeside-Marblehead. She would like to have permanent placement there as KC has determined she would like a career in elder-care. KC has also been employed at Erie Islands Resort.

After graduation KC will be enrolling in college, seeking a degree in elder-care. She is still deciding on whether or not she will be on campus or taking courses online. KC is looking at either Firelands BGSU or Terra Community College. KC has a kind heart and loves working with older people and toddlers. Her sunny smile and ability to make people feel valued will ensure her success in the workplace. Best wishes to KC and congratulations on achieving this milestone.

Young Eagles Rally & airport open house May 18

This weekend young people ages 8-17 will have a chance to take to the skies. On Saturday, May 18, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 1247 will be hosting a Young Eagles Rally as a part of the airport’s “Learn to Fly Day” activities. This event will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport, 3255 E. State Road, Port Clinton.

“Free airplane rides for area youth are just a part of the Rally,” said Lisa Benjamin, President of EAA Chapter 1247. “We hope to give a new generation the chance to learn more about all the possibilities available in the world of aviation.” Following the flight, each young person will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. Their name will be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook”, which is on permanent display at EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, WI. The logbook is also accessible online at www.youngeagles.org

Learn to Fly Day was created to invite all people interested in the world of flight to discover more by meeting local aviators and learning the initial steps toward earning a pilot’s license. In addition to the Young Eagle flights, the airport open house will offer food and beverages. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet local airport staff, talk to flight instructors and EAA members and learn more about other aviation opportunities such as joining a flying club.

Stan Gebhardt, manager of the airport stated, “We look forward to building one-on-one relationships with members of the community to help them learn all that general aviation has to offer.”

Ribbon Cutting for JT’s Catawba Cafe

The Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce announces the grand opening of JT’s Catawba Café located at 1871 NE Catawba Road in the Midway Marina Plaza.  The Port Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, May 17 at 10 a.m. Coffee and donuts will be served.

JT’S Catawba Café was the idea of “three sisters sharing childhood memories and grown-up dreams.” Sisters Jacquie (Couture) Below, Tonya Couture-Grubb and Tina (Couture) Schank opened JT’S Catawba Café on April 26.  JT’S Catawba Café has brought back a hometown favorite, the original “Mayhew’s Donut”, in addition to such popular items as JT’S Omelet, the Whopping Walleye Sandwich, and fluffy melt-in-your-mouth pancakes.

JT’S Catawba Café will continue with a Saturday Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Saturday Celebration will include a Donut Eating Contest at noon (register by 11:30 a.m,) a Creamer Stacking Contest, and raffles for gift certificates and t-shirts, in addition to other activities, including entertainment by JT’S “Donut Boy”.

Letter to the Editor, (Port Clinton Lighthouse)

For nearly two years there has been a grass roots effort to restore the historic Port Clinton lighthouse, which the late Dave Jeremy fortuitously saved from destruction in 1952. The current owner, Darrell Brand, in an effort to ensure it would be preserved into the future, sought to gift it to the city of Port Clinton. The Port Clinton Lighthouse Conservancy was created to fund and supervise the restoration work and facilitate the lighthouse transfer.

In December 2011, following a recommendation by the Parks Committee, the city council voted to accept the gift of the lighthouse. The expectation then was that the lighthouse would be placed in Waterworks Park near the end of a planned Adams Street extension. However, with the transfer of power to a new administration these plans were shelved. In April 2012 Mr. Brand met with newly elected Mayor Leone to discuss lighthouse placement. Mr. Brand wanted the structure to be located in the park near the Lake Erie shore while the mayor wanted it to be placed at the corner of Perry and Jefferson Streets, on the site of the recently demolished Waterworks building. They failed to reach an agreement.

The mayor’s chosen location was discussed at length by the Conservancy and found to be neither acceptable nor suitable, for these reasons: First, as the mayor knows, Mr. Brand rejects this location for aesthetic reasons, preferring a waterfront location close to its original location. Although some have claimed intransigence on his part, Mr. Brand has in fact worked tirelessly with the Conservancy to craft a proposal that allows the city great flexibility with placement while honoring his wishes. It is the mayor who refuses to consider any other options. Second, according to state officials, placing the lighthouse at Adams and Jefferson would preclude its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, while any of the waterfront locations identified in our proposal likely would be approved. Third, this location is aesthetically inconsistent with the historic nature of the lighthouse, particularly one whose purpose was as a pier-head light. For all of these reasons, we could not support nor recommend to Mr. Brand the adoption of the mayor’s proposed location for the lighthouse.

In June 2012 the mayor declined an invitation to meet with the Conservancy. Frustrated with the lack of action, the Conservancy decided this past January to initiate a grassroots campaign to educate the public about the lighthouse and its value to the city. We dubbed this campaign, “Bring Back the Light!” We held public meetings, spoke to local civic organizations, and distributed literature to educate the public. On March 1 the Conservancy submitted a comprehensive proposal to the city detailing the potential economic value of the lighthouse to the city and identifying three potential sites within a corridor of land on the waterfront in the Waterworks Park where the lighthouse could be placed without impinging on a proposed fishing lodge development.

After the Conservancy held a press conference to announce the release of its proposal, city officials indicated an interest in discussing the issue. Email exchanges followed, offering some hope the city might wish to work toward a solution. In a show of compromise, the Conservancy proposed placing the lighthouse at a location north of the Derby Pond, well outside the area earmarked for a future development. We invited city leaders and council members to view the site with us. We were encouraged when the safety and service director, chief of police, and some council members came out to the site and asked questions about our proposal. Their comments encouraged us to believe that we might yet have a deal.

Then in April, members of the Conservancy were summoned to a meeting with the Mayor, the City Council President and Safety Service Director. Our group went to the meeting hopeful that the city would now work with us toward a solution. Instead, we were presented with a list of reasons why the Derby Pond location was not suitable. These included a conflict with the annual fireworks, lack of ADA accessibility, interference with pending trail extension and Army Corps of Engineers shoreline work, environmental issues, and incompatibility with Mr. Rose’s proposed development scheme. The mayor considered these to be deal breakers. In our view, these were issues that could be worked through or were non-issues. For instance, according to a state website, the walking trail in the park, which would be adjacent to the lighthouse, is ADA accessible. The lighthouse itself, as a historic structure, is exempt from ADA rules. The fireworks could be moved to avoid conflicts, in which case the Conservancy could help to defray additional costs. The other reasons given were all addressable. The mayor again pushed for the Jefferson and Perry location.

Despite this disappointment, we left the meeting still hopeful of an agreement and buoyed by assurances from the mayor that he believed the lighthouse was a desirable asset. We thought that if the objections of the city could be overcome, an agreement might still be possible. Two week later, however, we received word that the city would not under any circumstances accept this gift unless there are “no strings attached” to its transfer. In other words, our Derby Pond location proposal was dead on arrival.

After long reflection and discussion we believe the mayor has not acted in good faith. We believe his intent all along has been to place the lighthouse at the Adams and Perry location and that he only gave lip service to other options in order to appear accommodating to us and reasonable to the press, the council, and members of the public. We do not believe the mayor sees the lighthouse as a part of the city’s historical heritage or future vision, but rather as potential window dressing for future Waterworks Park development.

We have gone out of our way to reach an agreement. We believe the Derby Pond location is a fair compromise, one that serves the people of the city. We are convinced that it will not conflict in any way with the proposed development (at least insofar as that plan has been portrayed to the public at large) and we believe there is broad support from the business community and the public for the Derby Pond location.

Frustrated that the city will not work with us and united in the belief that the lighthouse is too important to the people of Port Clinton for a select few to decide its fate, we are now making a direct appeal to the people of Port Clinton and to their direct representatives, the members of the city council, to take up this cause.

The lighthouse belongs to the people of Port Clinton and deserves to be placed in a location befitting its historic and iconic status. Its image graces the seal of the city of Port Clinton, as well as the logos of the Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Port Clinton. It reflects, as no other structure can, the city’s rich maritime heritage and unique character.  We intend to see it gifted to the city and placed in the Waterworks Park on the lakeshore, either during this administration or a future one. Too many dedicated volunteers have selflessly devoted too much time and energy to quit now.

We want to make it clear that we are keeping the door open and the lights on. We remain ever hopeful for a resolution to this matter. We are ready to work with the city at any time the city decides to work with us. But we can no longer wait for the fulfillment of empty promises. Please join us in this effort to return the lighthouse to the waterfront now, for the betterment of the city and its people.
