For Monday’s re-enactment of the Battle of Lake Erie, following is a list of ships and those they will be portraying:


Barbershop Quartet “Recycled” performs at Ida Rupp Library

Stombaugh, Engler, Williams and Carlo of Recycled

Thursday, Aug. 29, the barbershop quartet Recycled performed at the Ida Rupp Public Library. Spectators formed a circle in the front of the library and more people gathered after being drawn by the music. Quartet members Ted Stombaugh, tenor, from Findlay; Lou Engler, lead, from Port Clinton; Ted Williams, bass, from Belleview; and Maury Carlo, baritone, from Fremont all meet and practice in Fostoria. Engler said they decided to call themselves Recycled because they have all been in other quartets. The senior barbershop four sing in contests and at events.


PCHS looking for Alumni Band members for Sept. 13

Port Clinton High School Marching Band Alumni are invited to dust off their horns and join in the fun of the Annual Alumni Band Night. The Alumni Band will perform with the PCHS Marching band during halftime of the football game vs. Genoa on Sept. 13.  There is no All-School Reunion this year; however, the alumni band will still play with the PCHS Band.


Ohio Veterans Bonus for those who served

Ohio has a unique way of thanking these recent veterans and those who serve. It’s the Ohio Veterans Bonus, for service given during the times of the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But the Ohio Veterans Bonus won’t be around forever. The deadline for Persian Gulf War era veterans to apply is Dec. 31, 2013. Veterans of the Iraq War era have until Dec. 31, 2014, to apply. No deadline has been announced for veterans of the Afghanistan War era.


Oak Harbor’s new docks

The newly installed docks in downtown Oak Harbor on the Portage River are already being put to good use. There were two boats docked up this past weekend visiting downtown. The floating docks are just one piece of the recent improvements in downtown Oak Harbor that have been accomplished through the Downtown Revitalization Committee.


Sandusky Walk to End Alzheimer’s at OVH

The Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, and the Sandusky Walk to End Alzheimer’s Committee are inviting area residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Ohio Veterans Home. Registration and check-in will begin at the Pavilion at 9:30 a.m. with the walk beginning at 10:30 a.m. Erie County commissioner Pat Shenigo is serving as the Honorary Chair of this event.


Tall Ships Opening Ceremony

On Friday, Aug. 30 at 11:30 the Opening Ceremony was held celebrating the Victory of Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie. Many spectators were in attendance for the ceremony which was held in front of the Tall Ships Pathfinder and Playfair at Waterworks Park near Jefferson Street Pier.


First week high school football scores

Friday night was the kickoff to the high school football season in Northwest Ohio. All the area teams opened away from home, some far away. Danbury and Oak Harbor began the season with decisive victories, and Port Clinton lost to neighboring Woodmore.
