Oak Harbor girls fall in district finals in heartbreaking fashion

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Bucyrus Wynford found that out on Saturday. In a back-and-forth game that featured two ties and three lead changes in the closing minutes, Oak Harbor girls lost, 40-37, when Wynford’s Meghan Harrer’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Royals the victory in the Division III District Finals last Saturday at Seneca East High School in Attica.

The Rockets, who finish the season at 20-5, fought valiantly, playing virtually the entire game without guard Emma Barney before rallying from a seven-point deficit to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. Entering the final quarter trailing, 25-22, Oak Harbor fell behind by six before rallying to take a 35-34 lead on two free throws by Andrea Cecil with 2:21 remaining.

However, Cecil fouled out at the 1:55 mark on a questionable call when she was whistled for a foul on Wynford’s Brenna Quinn. Quinn connected on 1-of-2 free throws to tie the score at 35.

Oak Harbor defeats Port Clinton in sectional semifinal

Oak Harbor 56, Port Clinton 45

A few days before playing Clyde, Oak Harbor defeated Port Clinton, 56-45, in the sectional semifinal. The Rockets, who lost to the Redskins both times in the regular season, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Oak Harbor took a 15-5 lead after the first quarter with the big play coming as Andy Rathbun connected on a three-pointer just before the buzzer. The Rockets pushed the advantage to 20-5 at the 4:41 mark of the second quarter as they held Port Clinton (8-13) to just two field goals in the game’s first 12 minutes.

Down 41-27 to begin the fourth quarter, the ‘Skins went on a 12-5 run to cut the deficit to 46-39, but Oak Harbor ended any hopes of a comeback when Deshawn Johnson and Paul Shay scored on back-to-back baskets with 2:38 remaining to close it out.

Tate Haar led all scorers with 18 points, Johnson finished with 15 and Rathbun scored eight. Port Clinton got a combined 24 points from the Rumball brothers, with Tytan scoring 13 and Carter filling in with 11.

Oak Harbor boys fall to Clyde in sectional final

Despite jumping out to an early lead behind a great defensive effort, the Oak Harbor Rockets boys relinquished their lead early in the fourth quarter before falling, 44-34, to Clyde, in the Division II Sectional Final last weekend.

Oak Harbor (7-17) held a 9-1 lead midway thru the second quarter before the Fliers (16-7) cut the deficit to 11-7 at halftime. In the third quarter, which Clyde won, 20-16, Eric Wiseman scored a basket late in the third quarter to tie the score at 27 and begin a 9-0 run for the Fliers that would help them grab control.

Colin Gregory scored five straight points to begin the final quarter and Derek Gray scored on a layup to complete the run and make it 34-27 with 5:52 remaining.

The Rockets were able to get within four points on two separate occasions, the last, 38-34, with 1:24 left to play, but Clyde closed the game out from the free-throw line.

The Fliers were led by Dristen Cook, who had 10 points, and Gray, Rieman and Colin Gregory finished with eight points apiece. Oak Harbor got a game-high 17 points from Tate Haar and Andy Rathbun chipped in with five.

It was the final game for five Rocket seniors: Rathbun, Haar, Ben Cochran, Derek Wood and Josh Sarahman. Though it was a tough year for the team, those seniors were instrumental in helping to rebuild a program that was 3-18 two years ago and went 11-12 last season, a sign that things are headed in the right direction.

Port Clinton lady bowlers finish tenth

Port Clinton's Lady Redskin Bowlers finished tenth at the OHSAA State Finals in Columbus Saturday. They missed the cut to the top 8 by only 43 pins. Alysia Zoeller earned Second Team All Ohio for bowling a 584 series on games of 186-197-201.

"Our girls earned valuable experience by competing at State", said Coach Bob Black. "We had the cut in our reach, but too many errant first ball shots and too many missed single pin spares cost us advancing to the Baker Matches. Alysia bowled great all day, with only four open frames, and that's what they all have to do to compete at a higher level next year. Freshman Jozlynn Seamon came in and struck or spared ten straight frames. She will compete for a starting position next season. Reilly Wittman rolled a strong second game, and Sam Stroupe was solid all day."
