Sandusky to host first AAU Tournament

Next Level Images, located in Lorain, in conjunction with Sandusky Schools, Saint Mary's Central Catholic, and Margaretta schools will be hosting the first ever "Blue Streak Bash at Cedar Point". The Blue Streak Bash at Cedar Point is a multi-age AAU basketball tournament.

The tournament begins on Friday, May 17, and runs through Sunday, May 19. Championship games will be played at the "The Den" and "MPR" at St. Mary's Central Catholic and Bogart Elementary in Castalia.

Port Clinton loses to Perkins in boys tennis

Port Clinton Boys tennis took on Perkins on Monday at Port Clinton High School in an SBC Match.  The Redskins fell to 7-5  (4-3) on the year losing 0-5.  The Pirates improved to 11-0 (8-0).

The scores were as follows:

  • 1st Singles: Manickam Manickam (P) def. Matheus Rodrigues (PC) 6 - 2, 6 -0
  • 2nd Singles:  Josh Rohrbacher (P) def. Noah Cross (PC) 6 - 1, 6 - 1
  • 3rd Singles:  Gabe Murray (P) def. Leandro Papa (PC) 6 - 0, 6 - 0
  • 1st Doubles: Zach Greally/Cody Dominick def.  Matt Fillmore/Jeff Griffin (PC) 6 - 4, 6 - 3
  • 2nd Doubles:  Alex Cebull/Brian Kurtz def. Max Mercurio/Ryan Norgard (PC) 6 - 1, 7 - 5

Coach Aaron Taylor: “Matheus had a difficult match against Manickan who is undefeated in the SBC.  Noah had a very tough test as well as Josh played excellent tennis.  Leandro ran into a buzz saw at 3rd singles as Gabe played with excellent poise as a senior.  1st doubles was a very exciting match that was indicative of two great doubles teams.  2nd Doubles was also very exciting with a very close second set once Max and Ryan got going.”

Port Clinton defeats Oak Harbor in tennis

Port Clinton Boys tennis took on Oak Harbor Thursday at Port Clinton High School in an SBC Match.  The Redskins improved to 7 - 4  (4 - 2) on the year winning 4 - 1.  Port Clinton will resume league play home vs. Perkins Monday at 4 p.m.


The scores were as follows:

  • 1st Singles:  Eli Boldt (OH) def. Matheus Rodrigues (PC) 6 - 0, 5 - 7, 6 - 4
  • 2nd Singles:  Noah Cross (PC) def. Ian Rhoads (OH) 6 - 3, 4 - 6, 7 - 6 (3)
  • 3rd Singles:  Leandro Papa (PC) def. Doug Pennington (OH) 6 - 3, 6 - 0
  • 1st Doubles: Matt Fillmore/Jeff Griffin (PC) def. Matt Rayburn/Garett Crum (OH) 6 - 0, 6 - 1

Coach Aaron Taylor: “Matheus returned to action is a tough re-match with Eli, that Eli gritted out in the end today, both players played well and we can look forward to more in the SBC tournament/Sectionals.  Noah and Ian slugged out another 3 setter that was very similar to their previous match, Noah took over in the 3rd set tiebreaker to secure the victory.  Leandro came up with a big win today over Doug, hitting all his shots and playing with great confidence.  Matt and Jeff were able to team back up today and they never missed a beat with a thorough victory.  Max and Ryan played tough and mentally strong, pulling out a very even 3 setter today.  In JV action Ellis Adolph and Tristan Auxter won their match as did Steven Kast and Joseph Miller.  Cameron King and Avery Dackermann took a loss today but played well at 2 JV doubles.”

Port Clinton boys lose to Lexington

Port Clinton Boys tennis took on Lexington Monday at Port Clinton High School in an Ohio Coaches Tournament Match.  The Redskins fell to 6-2 on the year as Lexington won 5 - 0.

The scores were as follows:

  • 1st Singles:  Mason Dragos (L) def. Matheus Rodrigues (PC)  6-0, 6-0
  • 2nd Singles:  Matt Youse (L) def. Noah Cross (PC) 6-0, 6-0
  • 3rd Singles:  Mark Youse def. Leandro Papa (PC) 6-0, 6-0
  • 1st Doubles:  Matt Barkett/Tommy Barkett def. Matt Fillmore/Jeff Griffin (PC) 6-4, 3-0 (retired)
  • 2nd Doubles:  Jett Acero/Carson def. Max Mercurio/Ryan Norgard (PC) 6-1, 6-1

From Coach Aaron Taylor: “Matheus ran into an excellent player in Mason who was his District's champion last year.  Noah ran into a similar situation as Matt was his District's runner-up to Mason.  Leandro also went up against a former state doubles qualifier in Mark.  At 1st doubles Jeff and Matt were forced to retire due to an injury after playing a very close first set.  Ryan and Max had a tough time against a very cohesive unit from Lexington at 2 doubles."

Local cheer athletes to compete in Orlando Summit

Champion All Stars’ competitive quest has led them to ESPN Zone Wide World of Sports in Orlando, FL, May 4th and 5th to compete live via webcast. “The Summit” was created solely for the best cheer teams from across the country. Only 462 teams from 43 divisions will receive bids as they take “The Climb.”

At the Cheer Power competition event in Columbus on March 24th, Champion All Stars Junior 3 team received Grand Champion Title of their division and with this title they received Varsity Jackets, Champion sterling silver rings for all 20 girls and a full paid bid to The Summit with each girl receiving $510 to pay for all competition expenses and boarding.


The Champions All-Stars are from Erie, Ottawa, Sandusky, Lorain and Huron counties. The mission of the Castalia-based group is “to stand above and a world apart in developing true professional leaders without sacrificing integrity, character or sportsmanship”.

It takes exceptional skill, stamina and determination for teams to make this climb and only 10% of teams from across the country will make the cuts. Champion Cheer Athletics has been fortunate to have three teams make it.
