Oak Harbor girls fall in district finals in heartbreaking fashion

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. Bucyrus Wynford found that out on Saturday. In a back-and-forth game that featured two ties and three lead changes in the closing minutes, Oak Harbor girls lost, 40-37, when Wynford’s Meghan Harrer’s desperation three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Royals the victory in the Division III District Finals last Saturday at Seneca East High School in Attica.

The Rockets, who finish the season at 20-5, fought valiantly, playing virtually the entire game without guard Emma Barney before rallying from a seven-point deficit to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. Entering the final quarter trailing, 25-22, Oak Harbor fell behind by six before rallying to take a 35-34 lead on two free throws by Andrea Cecil with 2:21 remaining.

However, Cecil fouled out at the 1:55 mark on a questionable call when she was whistled for a foul on Wynford’s Brenna Quinn. Quinn connected on 1-of-2 free throws to tie the score at 35.

Rocket forward Allie Kuhn gave her team a 36-35 lead when she made a free throw with 1:35 left and, after trading possessions, the Royals turned the ball over before Athena Eli hit 1-of-2 from the line with 22.8 seconds to play. But Oak Harbor could not hold the lead as Quinn converted on a put back with 12 seconds to play. The Rockets’ ensuing possession ended in a jump ball with 2.4 seconds remaining and the possession arrow favoring Wynford.

That’s where it ended for Oak Harbor as the Royals heaved a pass the length of the court before the loose ball was recovered by Alyssa Harrer, who fed her sister Meghan the ball for the winning shot.

The Rockets dominated the first quarter, winning it 7-2 before pushing the advantage to 12-4. However, Wynford ended the half on a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to 13-11 at the half before taking the lead 40 seconds into the third quarter.

In the first quarter is where things turned south for Oak Harbor. After establishing early control and taking a 5-0 lead, Barney stole the ball and went in for a layup before her foot landed on top of another player and she lay on the ground in pain. The Rockets were never the same after that.

Oak Harbor 54, Bucyrus 48

The Rockets were in control for much of the game before they had to fight off the Bucyrus for a 54-48 victory in the district semifinals last week. With Oak Harbor holding a 43-22 lead midway thru the third quarter, the Lady Red, keyed by Macey Sheerer, went on a 24-7 run to cut the deficit to 50-46 with 2:46 to play. To make matters worse, Andrea Cecil and Emma Barney fouled out. However, the Rockets persevered and found a way to win, scoring four of the game’s last six points.

Maddy Rathbun finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, Andrea Cecil scored 12 points and Emma Barney scored 11. Bucyrus was led by Sheerer, who had a game-high 25 points, and Kristen Orewiler scored eight points.

Oak Harbor controlled the game early, taking a 13-3 after one quarter and held a 31-19 advantage at the half before opening the third quarter with an 11-3 run.
