The Danbury Lakers completed their season with a much-needed victory over West Unity Hilltop on Friday, defeating the Cadets, 38-35 to finish the season with a 3-7 record.
After playing well for much of the season’s first four games and earning a 2-2 record, Danbury fell on hard times, losing five consecutive games before finishing off the year with a victory.
The final score was not indicative of just how much Danbury controlled the game. The Lakers held a 35-14 lead going into the final period before holding off a rally by the Cadets.
Danbury receiver, Jim Chamberlin, snags this 36 yard flea flicker pass from quarterback Seth Vargo for a touchdown against Hilltop
Senior running back Cody German scored on a 19-yard run to put Danbury ahead, 7-0, before quarterback Seth Vargo added a touchdown on a 9-yard dash to push the advantage to 14-0.
Vargo finished 11-of-20 for 213 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Jimmy Chamberlain had nine receptions for 181 yards and two scores in his final game.
It was a nice way to send out the Laker seniors, a group of players that has helped to make the football program competitive again.
The final league standings are as follows: 1. Northwood 8-2 (7-0); 2. Edon 8-2 (6-1); 3. Toledo Christian 6-4 (5-2); 4. Gibsonburg 5-5 (4-3); 5. Ottawa Hills 3-7 (3-4); 6. Danbury 3-7 (2-5); 7. Hilltop 2-8 (1-6); 8. Cardinal Stritch 0-10 (0-7)
While the Lakers will lose some key players to graduation, they will bring back an experienced group as well as some incoming freshman that are coming off a junior-high league championship.
