BCS Volunteer Appreciation Night

The Intra-District Committee of the Benton-Carroll-Salem School District will host a Volunteer Appreciation and Recruitment Night on Thursday, April 3, at the Oak Harbor High School Cafeteria. This event is open to current volunteers, people interested in learning more about volunteering, school staff, and all community members. 

Doors open at 6 p.m. with a welcome from Superintendent Guy Parmigian.  Free pizza and a free open swim will be available from 6:15-7:30 p.m.  The walking track will also be open during this event. 

This will be an opportuninty to meet representatives from school organizations, network and learn about becoming a volunteer for BCS Schools to make a difference in the lives of students.  Volunteers are needed to work directly with students, work behind the scenes (yard work, office work, bulletin boards, etc.) and work on special projects (website, Career Day, taking photos, etc.).

Door prizes for this event have been donated by African Safari Wildlife Park, Allied Chiropractic of Fremont, Bill's Auto, Coffee Express, Drown's Dairy and Ella Lou handmade creations on Etsy.

Benefit for Kyler Hammer

There will be a benefit chicken barbecue for Kyler Hammer on March 30 at the Eagles Nest Hall, 210 Jefferson St. in Oak Harbor. The event, sponsored by Batdorff Real Estate, will begin at 11 a.m. and will continue until the dinners are sold out. Tickets are $9 for the meal that includes chicken, baked potato, cole slaw and dessert. Carry-out only.

Kyler is the son of Nick and Megan (Brandt) Hammer, grandson of Dean Hammer, Laura (Behnken) Hammer and John and Karen Brandt and great-grandson of Bernie and Gene Hammer and the late Clarence and Joan Behnken. He was born on June 3, 2013, with a genetic disorder requiring extensive therapy that is not covered by insurance.

Advance purchase is recommended for the dinner. St. Boniface fish fry keeps growing

St.Boniface Catholic Parish found that its famous all-you-can-eat fish fry had become so popular it had outgrown the undercroft beneath the church. Its new venue in the school gymnasium reflects how the event has grown and changed over the years.

The fish fry started in 2005 as a necessary fund raiser to help St. Boniface School meet expenses. Each Friday during Lent they served about 250 dinners of fish with a side of cole slaw. As the menu expanded their reputation spread and the crowds of customers grew. The undercroft was just too small to comfortably accommodate the serving of 500 meals a night.
