B-C-S Board honors retirees and names new teachers

The Benton-Carroll-Salem School District Board of Education met on May 27, with a retirement celebration for our retiring certified and classified staff.   The meeting opened with a reception.  Each retiree was honored by being presented with a rose plant from the Board of Education. 

The B-C-S staff who were being honored were:  Mrs. Cindy Bringman, Bus Driver, Mrs. Michele Boussalia, High School French Teacher, Mrs. Lynn Brownell, Reading Teacher, Mrs. Joy Ceraldi, First Grade Teacher, Mrs. Connie Milbrodt, Custodian, Mrs. Annette Nordlund, Family & Consumer Sciences Teacher, Mr. Bill Rauch, Custodian, Mrs. Nancy Siefke, T.E.A.M. Teacher, Mrs. Laura Ulery, Spanish Teacher, and Mr. Bob VanHorn, Art Teacher.  

The Board also heard an update from Mr. Travis Magoto on the on the initiative to raise private donations to purchase new OHHS Band Uniforms.   Mr. Magoto explained that the fundraising effort was very successful and that the amount necessary to purchase new band uniforms was raised completely from private donations through the Oak Harbor Music Boosters.  The uniforms were purchased recently and are valued at more than $50,000.   The Music Boosters officially donated the uniforms to the Board.  The Board expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the efforts of the Boosters, and the community who rallied to support the cause of new band uniforms.  Students, staff, and community members are all eager to see the uniforms in use for the start of the 2014-2015 school year!

Micah Mensing, Oak Harbor High School student and Ohio District I FFA President gave a presentation on how he was selected to be President.  Micah explained the rigorous process he went through to achieve the President position, and thanked folks like his teachers, his family, and his fellow students who supported him in his pursuit of the President position.    Micah explained how he was looking forward to talking with high school students from across our region in his capacity as District I FFA President.

In other business, Treasurer Tim Coffman reported on the 5-year forecast, and bus bids were accepted with two buses to be purchased as part of the district’s rotation for purchasing busses and maintaining a safe fleet.  

The following personnel actions were taken:   Mrs. Ginger Velliquette was hired as Spanish Teacher; Mrs. Stacy Grieger was hired as a part-time Speech/Language Pathologist; Fall Athletic Coaches for the 2014-2015 school year were approved; and teacher contracts for current staff were approved for Lauren Boss, Eric Dusseau, Tiffany Gwinn, Janene Lattimore, Megan McGuire, Amy Sandrock, Kelly Traver,  Samantha Biggert, Laurel Byington, Nicole Lang, Adam Painter, Travis Magoto, Angie Lenin, Lauretta Swint, Kara Wise, and Tiffany Wojtowicz; a continuing contract was awarded to Elizabeth Malik who will move to be the art teacher at Oak Harbor High School in the coming school year.  

An update on the 2014-2015 school calendar was presented by Dr. Parmigian and approved.  The calendar is posted on the district website at bcssd.com, and will also be in the July Sampler.  

Also, donations  were accepted with gratitude from the following:  Mr. & Mrs. Josh Overmyer for softball complex improvements; Athletic Booster Club to the Girl’s Basketball & Softball Team’s Camp Accounts as well as the Boy’s Basketball Camp Account, and to the athletic department for new girl’s  basketball uniforms;  The Sunday Night Volleyball League donated monies to purchase a new volleyball net for the High School volleyball program; Oak Harbor Music Boosters for new marching band uniforms.  An out-of-state trip was approved to Washington D.C. for F.F.A. students to attend the Washington Leadership Conference and to visit other sights in the area from June 10-June 15.  Finally, the Board approved the 2014 class list for graduation, which was held on June 1. 

The Board of Education also met on June 12 for a special meeting.   Mrs. Cheryl Schell was awarded a three year contract effective August 1, 2014, as Principal of Oak Harbor High School.   Mrs. Schell has almost 25 years of experience in education in the Fremont City School District.  For the past several years, Mrs. Schell has served as the assistant principal at Fremont Ross High School.

In other personnel action, one year certified teaching contracts were awarded to the staff who will be new teachers with the district beginning in the 2014-2015 school year:  Mr. Robert Hawn, High School Health/PE, Mrs. Elizabeth Guerin, Grade 3 at R.C. Waters, and Kristen McKee, Grade 2 at R.C. Waters.

The next Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 23, at 3 p.m. at the Oak Harbor High School Media Center at 11661 West State Route 163 in Oak Harbor, Ohio.
