This weekend, Oct. 11 and 12, East Harbor State Park is hosting its annual Halloween Campout. East Harbor’s Halloween Campout is the biggest Halloween celebration in all of the state parks in Ohio. Almost all of the 574 campsites are full and some of the campsites have been booked six months in advance. This is the last weekend for the event that, because of popular demand, now runs for two weekends. Saturday morning campers will have a sausage gravy and biscuit breakfast available from 8-9:30 a.m. After breakfast the family fun begins:
9-11 a.m. Crafts with Pat Catan’s
10 a.m. Costume Doggie Parade
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Lunch (hot dogs and hobo stew for $3)
12-2 p.m. Dah Dungeon (have someone arrested for fun)
1-2 p.m. Kids games in front of the Nature Center
4-5:30 p.m. Trick or Treat
6-9 p.m. Dah Dungeon (have someone arrested for fun)
7:30-9 p.m. Haunted Walk
7:30-9 p.m. Zombie Prison
8-10 p.m. Hayride
8 p.m. Bonfire
All activities are family friendly and family oriented and Ken Greider, the chairperson for the Halloween Campout and president of the Friends of East Harbor State Park group, said he thinks that’s why the event is so popular. The public knows that the East Harbor Campout is a safe place for all family members to enjoy Halloween festivities.
All of the money that is made over the Halloween Campout goes back into the park. Recently new benches and a new flag pole were purchased with money from the fund. Greider said that this year, the Friends of East Harbor State Park plan want to use the funds to dredge the pond near the exit of the park and make it bigger and handicap accessible.
