Jim Sass on the Trail

Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass and his daughter Laura Sass, a high school science teacher at Garraway Schools in Sugar Creek, hiked 15 miles of the Appalachian Trail in west central Virginia on July 25-27. Jim had never backpacked before. Laura had backpacked while living in Idaho.

Along the way Jim and Laura met a hiker who was walking the entire 2100 miles of the Trail, from Georgia to Maine. The first night they also had a close encounter with a curious bear, 10 feet from their tent.

Jim reports that the three days and 2 nights up and down the mountains were very physically demanding. “Sometimes the trail was just rocks to climb over,” said Jim.”It was a great experience.”
