September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Ida Rupp Public Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that students have the most import school supply of all, a free library card. Resources at the Ida Rupp Public Library in Port Clinton are available to anyone who has a library card.

Oak Harbor volleyball team wins tri-match

Oak Harbor Varsity volleyball team defeated Danbury in two on Saturday, 25-19, 25-18.  The Rockets also defeated Lake in three, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18.  Jordyn Thorp led the Rockets  with 25 kills.  Annie Quisno provided 28 assists, and Athena Eli added 31 digs.  

The JV also defeated both Danbury and Lake.

The Bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie, Sept. 10

The National Park Service continues to commemorate the Bicentennial of The Battle of Lake Erie, fought between American and British navies during the War of 1812. This battle was a decisive American victory led by Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry from the safe harbor at South  Bass Island on Sept. 10, which led to a long-lasting peace between the United States, Great  Britain, and Canada. 

A series of events will take place at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Port Clinton Council

There is a lot of talk around town right now about council members and what their personal convictions are concerning Mike Rose and Washington Properties' development of Water Works Park. I would like to remind everyone that the elected representatives of Port Clinton are here to represent the people which they serve. Personal beliefs and interests of council members should have no part in making decisions and choices for Port Clinton residents.

Bicentennial

I was fortunate to attend the Battle of Lake Erie Bicentennial and witness the ships in their glory. What a wonderful close to a great weekend. I would like to thank the P.O.R.T.S. Committee for bringing this event to fruition and entertaining the entire area for a long and beautiful period of time, a period of time that reminded me of the Port Clinton area so many years ago.

Plat books available at OSU extension office

The new Ottawa County Plat Book published by the Farm & Home Publishers is now available. What is a plat book? It is a public record that contains maps of land, showing the division of the land into streets, blocks, and lots and indicates the measurements of the individual parcels. Copies are available for $20 at the Ohio State University Extension Ottawa County office, located at 240 W. Lake St., Unit C, Oak Harbor. All proceeds to benefit the Ottawa County 4-H Program.

Perry’s Victory at Ida Rupp

Jeff Helmer, Park Ranger at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial on South Bass Island, will be at the Ida Rupp Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Mr. Helmer will be speaking at 7 p.m. 

September 10 is the 200th Anniversary of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victory over the British fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie. Mr. Helmer will offer a Power Point presentation detailing the events leading up to the battle and the effects that Perry’s victory had regarding U.S. control of the Great Lakes and its expansion west of Ohio.
