A new American pizza champion has been crowned for 2012. Bradley Corbin of Sloopy’s Sports Café in Lakeside, was named America’s Best Pizza Maker at the ninth annual American Pizza Championship (APC) in Orlando.
PMQ Pizza Magazine hosted the competition, which took place Sept. 23 at NYPD Pizza’s Metrowest location. In addition to the first place trophy, Corbin earned a spot on the U.S. Pizza team and a free trip to Italy to compete in the 2013 World Pizza Championship (worldpizzachampionship.com).
Each competitor prepared two pies, one for the judges and one for the crowd. NYPD’s customers were treated to some of the best pizzas in the country. The winning pie, The Hibachi Pizza, featured Japanese white sauce, chicken, shrimp, sautéed vegetables that included carrots, onions, broccoli, mushrooms and zucchini as well as fried rice. It was finished with more Japanese white sauce, an oyster/soy sauce and sesame seeds.
The American Pizza Championship was judged by a four-member panel consisting of Alex Terife, a pizza entrepreneur from Miami; Charlotte Davis, host of The Morning Mouthful on 91.5 WPRK in Orlando; Steve Leiber, winner of the 2010 American Pizza Championship and director of franchise sales for BurgerFi in Singer Island, Fla.; and Carlos Zoppetti, president of the United Pizzeria Association in São Paulo, Brazil.
