Ice cream social set for local candidates

There will be an ice cream social campaign fundraiser for Ottawa County Candidates Dr. Dan Cadigan, coroner, and John Huffman and Jodi Regal, commissioner, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 30, at the home of Dan and Amy Laity, 18190 W. Portage River South, Elmore.
Toft’s ice cream will be served along with a variety of tasty toppings. Sugar free selections will also be available.
All interested voters are invited to attend and learn more about these candidates. Any donations toward the campaigns will be accepted.

Picnic, fundraiser coming up for Angela Zimmann

There will be a picnic and campaign fundraiser for 5th District Congressional Candidate Angela Zimmann at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the home of Dan and Amy Laity, 18190 W. Portage River South, Elmore.
Come out and meet Zimmerman and hear why she wants to represent the recently redrawn 5th district (and western Ottawa County). Any donations towards the campaign will be accepted.

K. of C. installs new officers

Port Clinton Knights of Columbus Council 1750 recently installed new officers for 2012-2013. The installation ceremonies were conducted at the Council Hall by District Deputy John Madison, assisted by Chaplin Rev. Ray Ensman. A reception was held in conjunction with the ceremonies attended by relatives and friends. Lunch & learn

University of Toledo engineering student Robert Garber took time out of his summer co-op at First Energy last week to help with Port Clinton’s summer lunch program. Garber, 21, helped kids plant zucchini seeds during a presentation by “Recycle Dude” Brad Schwann. The twice weekly lunch is a total enrichment program which includes the meal and a craft or lesson.

According to United Way employee and site coordinator Kristen Gerwin, no kid is turned away from the lunch program. The meal and activities are offered at 11:30 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays at three locations: Jefferson Elementary, Lakeview Estates and Bay Meadows. The lunches are packed and served by local volunteers and all the food and supplies are donated. To volunteer, donate or for information, call the United Way office at 419-734-6645.

Local elected to sorority’s international council

Gamma Phi Beta Sorority has elected Sandra Biegelman Burba, of Marblehead, to the position of Panhellenic Affairs Vice President.
With a broad resume of volunteerism and commitment to community, Burba has given more than 28 years to a variety of volunteer leadership positions for Gamma Phi Beta. Initiated at Beta Epsilon Chapter at Miami University (Ohio), Burba will serve on a board of seven, overseeing an international volunteer base of more than 120 and a membership exceeding 180,000.
“I am excited to once again serve on Gamma Phi Beta’s International Council and look forward to representing Gamma Phi Beta in the interfraternal community as the National Panhellenic Delegate,” said Burba.
Prior to moving into the role of Panhellenic Affairs Vice President, Burba served Gamma Phi Beta as sorority director-Panhellenic affairs. Burba served on International Council from 2002-06 in the role of Alumnae Vice President.
