American Red Cross of Ottawa County’s Club Red held the 7th Annual “Sherry & Chocolates” event Thursday evening at the home of Jim and Susan Finn on Catawba Island. The annual membership drive event entertained 85 guests and was hosted by Club Red founder Cindy Amerine. The evening featured a tour of “Rosecliff”, the picturesque Finn home. Guests also enjoyed the skit, “After the Glow,” performed by Miss America 1963, Jackie Mayer, along with Brian Dickman and Jeff Kearney.

VFW sponsors fishing day for Wounded Warriors

Most of us would take the opportunity to go fishing on Lake Erie for granted, especially if we had a friend with a boat or cottage with a waterfront break wall. However, consider your predicament if you were confined to a wheelchair or had recently lost a limb due to a combat injury. The effort to arrange a fishing trip to Lake Erie might take on overwhelming challenges.

Perry’s Victory to host 1812 dress making workshop

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial will host a two day “War of 1812 Dress Making Workshop” the weekend of June 15-16, and again June 29-30 in preparation for upcoming bicentennial events.  Workshop participants will have the chance to collaborate with historical fashion experts Cathy Taylor and Steve Pontious in order to create their 1812 garment. The workshop will be held at Put-in-Bay Town Hall 9 a.m.– 5 p.m. During the workshop Taylor and Pontious will step you through the process of creating a unique and personalized frock from start to finish with tips to achieve authenticity and information about the style of the time, most notable for the ubiquitously preferred empire waist line.

Relay for Life celebrated in Oak Harbor

This year the American Cancer Society celebrates its 100 year anniversary and in Ottawa County it was celebrated enthusiastically at the Relay for Life at Oak Harbor High School. Fifteen teams raised over $48,000 for cancer research. Over 400 people attended the event which took place starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 7, and ended at noon on Saturday, June 8.
