Collin Salyers representing PCFD and Mayor Vince Leone representing PCPD shake hands before their Emergency Services Olympics event.
On Thursday, March 20 representatives from the Port Clinton Police Department and the Port Clinton Fire Department and EMS completed two more events in their Emergency Services Olympics. Nate Edmonds of PCPD went up against Karl Kopchak of PCFD in a basketball tournament and Kopchak of the fire department came out on top. After the basketball tournament, Collin Salyers, representing the PCFD, went up against Mayor Vince Leone, representing PCPD, in a taco eating contest at Lock, Dock and Barrel. It was a close race, but Mayor Leone had 16 tacos to Salyers’ 12.
After a total of three events so far in 2014, the Port Clinton Fire Department and EMS lead the Olympics 2 to 1. The Emergency Services Olympics takes place throughout the year. Service members sign up for events and once an event is full the contest is held.
“It’s a good way to have the departments put their money where their mouth is since they are so competitive,” said organizer Mike Snider. “The only time some of these guys see each other is at an emergency scene. It’s good to build relationships between the departments outside of that atmosphere.”
