Port Clinton preschool center gets national accreditation

The WSOS Early Childhood center located at The Sutton Center in Port Clinton was notified Wednesday, May 28, that it has been approved for accreditation by the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals.

This center joins five other WSOS preschool centers, which has also received accreditation by NAEYC.

“We are proud to have received this honor,” said Family Development Director Jacquie Wells. “This accreditation affirms the good work we do and helps guide us as we strive to provide the best services to our communities.”

To earn accreditation by NAEYC, the centers went through an extensive self-study process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related accreditation criteria. The program received NAEYC Accreditation after an onsite visit by NAEYC assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the 10 program standards. NAEYC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years.

In the 25 years since NAEYC Accreditation was established, it has become a widely recognized sign of high-quality early childhood education. More than 7,000 programs are currently accredited by NAEYC, approximately 8 percent of all preschools and other early childhood programs.

The NAEYC accreditation system was created to set professional standards for early childhood education, and to help families identify high-quality preschools, child care centers and other early education programs.

WSOS operates three other centers in the WSOS service area, which are also working toward accreditation. The other centers are located in Genoa, Pemberville, and Perrysburg/Rossford.
