Salvation Army Programs

The Salvation Army's Ottawa County Unit kicked off the 2013 Red Kettle Campaign last Friday with a breakfast at Catawba Island Club. Northwest Ohio Salvation Army Captain Tawny Cowen-Zanders announced the Campaign Goal would be $64,000 this year.

The Salvation Army needs volunteers to help ring the bell during the campaign, which will run from Nov. 18 through Dec. 24. Two hours of bell ringing is equivalent to donating $101.03. The Salvation Army depends on local residents, organizations and businesses to Adopt-a-Kettle at their various locations during the holiday season.

All proceeds from the Red Kettle campaign are used directly to serve the needs of Ottawa County with rent/mortgage assistance, utility payments, security deposits, food, prescription medicine, clothing and emergency shelter. The Salvation Army also provides 37 local children the opportunity to attend a cost-free, week long summer camp at Camp NEOSA; provides school supplies through the Tools for School program and provides Christmas gifts through the Ottawa County Helping Hand Toy Drive.

If you are interested in participating in this year’s bell-ringing campaign, contact Maureen Saponari at 419-732-ARMY (2769).

The Ottawa County Helping Hand Toy Drive is the collaborative effort of The Salvation Army, Toys for Tots Weapons Company 1/24 and Ottawa County Holiday Bureau. These agencies partner with other community organizations to assure that each child in Ottawa County receives a gift under their tree this holiday season. By partnering, they are able to provide assistance to all who are in need and make donated dollars stretch by not duplicating one another. Because of this collaboration, last year nearly 6,500 toys were distributed to children in Ottawa County. This year it is anticipated that 1,900 children countywide will be served.

The toy collection boxes will be out in local stores, churches, banks and businesses starting Nov. 19th and through Dec.10th. All toys collected stay in Ottawa County.
