Good Librations VIII a classic success

The Michael Shirtz Band plays at Good Librations' Taj Mahal

Erin Lavelle, Kelly Lavelle and Lindsay Mark have been assisting at Good Librations for six years now.

The 8th annual Good Librations was hosted by the Marblehead Peninsula Library Committee at the Johnson's Island Clubhouse on Saturday evening, Sept. 7.   226 supportive and enthusiastic guests attended the fundraising gala, which is themed each year around a popular book. This year the 28 person committee chose Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days to offer an international, vintage experience for the night.

Hearty appetizers from around the world were enjoyed by the guests, served with smiles by the following students:  Alyssa Almendinger, Katie Almendinger, Taylor Bishoff, James Dorko, Caleb Gerber, Jetta Gerber, Ben Keller, Erin Lavelle, Kelly Lavelle, Grady Mark, Lindsay Mark, Lexie Mitchell, Sierra Puckett, Autumn Schmidt, Robin Skinner, and Caitlin Thompson.

Guests also enjoyed a feast for the eyes with the custom decorations of such sights as  the Taj Majal, a hot air balloon rising through the rafters, an exotic Near Eastern style tent, and artistic murals of the transportation revolution that highlighted the title theme.  The crowd also was treated to jazz and easy listening music provided by the Michael Shirtz band.

Community merchants, individuals and artists donated the nearly 200 Silent Auction items which so significantly contribute to the excitement and success of this fundraiser, and ultimately to the establishment of a library and resource center on the peninsula.  Guests claimed surprise packages filled with items of the places where the book's character, Phileas Fogg, traveled; and they enjoyed the "Wheel-O-Wine" game to take home wines of the world.  Guests all left with a travel mug gift from ExLibris: Books to Buy, Books to Borrow.

Good Librations: "Around the World in 80 Days" realized $15,000 in just one night, thanks to the generous support from the community, taking another step closer to establishing a full-function library on the Marblehead peninsula. ExLibris is open daily, 10 a.m. until 5p.m., through October 15.
