On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary held a Puppy Mill Rescue Reunion. The event was held from 2-4 p.m. at the Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary located at 3620 E. State Road in Port Clinton. In attendance were Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Levorchick, Ottawa County Dog Warden Jo Lynn Hetrick and Professional Dog Trainer Chuck Stella from Elite K911. Levorchick, a parent to two rescued dogs himself, said the event was “a great opportunity to bring the dogs together again and to bring awareness to the sanctuary and its monetary needs.”

Owner and operator Nancy Benevento-Brown was happy to see all the rescue dogs again. She said, “It’s worth everything in the world to see the dogs safe and happy.” When talking with Nancy it is easy to see her passion and love for what she does and for the dogs that she rescues. Sunday’s event was especially for a rescue that involved 89 dogs rescued from one puppy mill. When the dogs were rescued they were so filthy that Nancy and the other rescuers didn’t know what breed the dogs were. It took five vehicles to get the dogs from the puppy mill to Island Safe Harbor Animal Sanctuary where the dogs began their new, safe lives. All of the dogs from that rescue were adopted but the five that are still at the sanctuary waiting to find their forever home.
