ILYA Senior Regatta at Put-in-Bay

Ragbag Report

The next big sailing event is this weekend, Thursday through Sunday, the Inter-Lake Yachting Association’s Senior Regatta at Put-in-Bay. Well over 100 yachts and crews will descend on the Island during the Deep Water Races that will take place today (Thursday, Aug. 1). First up is the Cleveland Deep Water Race on Wednesday evening, July 31. That will be followed by Deep Water Races coming to South Bass Island from Detroit, Toledo, Port Clinton and Sandusky. The actual regatta takes place next Friday through Sunday, Aug. 2-4. The courses will be a combination of “Around the Islands” racing as well as a day of short course racing. There will be many social activities for the sailors as well. Pretty much all of the social activities will take place at Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, which will be a busy place. We will see you there!

I made the trek over to South Bass Island for the Awards Ceremony for the Junior Bay Week Regatta last Thursday. The banquet filled the Niagara Center with nearly 150 Juniors competing in Thistles, Lasers and 420s. Josh Mallet from Vermilion Boat Club was the winner in the 3-man crew Thistles. All of the sailors who finished in the top three in each class won college scholarships from the Yachtsman’s Fund of the I-LYA.

Don’t Give Up The Start! Be sure to make plans now to attend the Green Island Race at Port Clinton Yacht Club. This annual event will be made even more special by coinciding with the arrival of the Tall Ships to Port Clinton on Thursday, Aug. 29. The Green Island Race itself will be held on Sunday, Sept. 1, a day before the 16 Tall Ships that will be located all around the western basin of Lake Erie will head to the re-enactment site to observe the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie and the victory of the American Fleet over the British Fleet in September of 1813. Two of the Tall Ships will be docked directly across the Portage River from Port Clinton Yacht Club. To register, go to their website at www.portclintonyachtclub.com.
