The morning of the Fourth of July began with a bang in downtown Port Clinton with the first annual Star Spangled Squirt Gun 5K Run/Walk. Kiya Brown, PCHS class of 2015, led the singing of the national anthem before the 9 a.m. start. Along the course spectators with squirt guns targeted their favorite runners, and a few runners armed with their own squirt guns retaliated. Kip Kinn of Bucyrus was the first of the 200 plus runners and walkers to cross the finish line.
Gabe DeFreitas, class president of the Port Clinton High School class of 2015, organized the event after "a couple students approached me with an idea to put together a fund raiser for school events. The money we raise will keep prices low for all students so all students can attend senior functions like prom and the senior lunch." DeFreitas thanked community sponsors, participants and students for the support.
