The Chicago Tribune has named it one of the 60 “must-see worldwide events” for 2013. The Daytime television network featured it as one of four top travel destinations in 2013 (along with Turkey, Rio de Janeiro and Sri Lanka).

It is the Bicentennial Celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie, and the epicenter is the Lake Erie Islands area of the north coast. So forgo plans for a summer vacation and get the guest room ready, because this is where it is happening.

Perry’s Monument and Victory Center on Put-in-Bay will be the location for many of the activities from late August through September 10. The Celebration will include a fleet of Tall Ships in an historic recreation of the Battle of Lake Erie and Port Festivals in waterfront cities in the U.S. and Canada. Visitors will be able to tour the ships, enlist as crew members in the reenactment, or be part of the Bicentennial Fleet or Militia.

There will be a parade of boats; a performance by the Ohio State University marching band; a Regency Ball; presentations on the War of 1812 in history music, dance, fashion, film and art; a military fly-over; a Boy Scout encampment; Lights of Peace harbor illumination and many other events at Put-in-Bay and throughout the region.
