Ways to help The Salvation Army help Ottawa County

Ottawa County’s Salvation Army programs offer opportunities to volunteer time and resources this holiday season. Ways that an individual or organization can help include:


The Red Kettle Campaign. The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit, serving Ottawa County, needs bell ringers for their 19th Annual Red Kettle Campaign. Ringing the Bell for two hours is the equivalent of donating over $101 to The Salvation Army. There are seven locations in Ottawa County: Miller’s Market in Genoa, Community Market in Oak Harbor, Community Market in Port Clinton, Kroger’s and WalMart and Bassett's in Port Clinton, and bell ringing will continue through Christmas Eve. 700 Volunteers are needed to meet the goal of $62,000. Last year over $60,000 was raised, and there are many more openings for bell-ringers this year. All monies raised by the Red Kettle Campaign go back into the community assisting with rent, mortgage evictions, utility disconnects, fuel and medications.

There are many challenges in place this year. Port Clinton High School is challenging Oak Harbor High School. There is a Battle of the Badges competition that includes the Port Clinton Police Department, Fire Departments, Sheriff’s Department, the US Coast Guard station and possible Sandusky Bay Station of the Border Control. There is also a Mayors’ Challenge.

The Coats for Families Program is currently under way at The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit. Last year 1,032 coats were donated, cleaned by Executive Cleaners then re-distributed to those in need of a warm, winter coat. There is a desperate need of children’s coats this year. Executive Cleaners is offering 10% off of your cleaning order if you drop off a coat for The Salvation Army.

The Holiday Bureau The Salvation Army Port Clinton Service Unit is now accepting Holiday Bureau applications for Christmas assistance with food and toys.  An application can be picked up and returned at Suite #800 at The Sutton Center in Port Clinton.

Volunteer opportunities.  Organizations, families and businesses that want to give back to their community through the Salvation Army can do so by volunteering to ring the bell, by donating coats or items to the Tree A Rama Auction, and by bidding on items at the Auction. Businesses that would like to have a Toy drive will be supplied with Toy Boxes and/or Angel Tree tags.
