The 2013 class of Leadership Ottawa County received an informative overview of Ottawa County government during its Oct. 11 meeting.

County Commissioners Steve Arndt, Jim Sass, and Mark Stahl opened the afternoon at the Ottawa County Courthouse in Port Clinton by discussing the planning, funding, and budgeting of county government. Sheriff Stephen Levorchick joined the class and challenged them by presenting a mock budgeting crisis for members of the class to solve. Commissioner Sass then took the class on a tour of the 112 year-old courthouse, where Common Pleas Court Judge Bruce Winters gave an overview of the functions and staff of the court with special emphasis on the issues facing Ottawa County and its residents.

Auditor Jodi Regal gave an overview of the many varied functions of the Auditor’s office including taxes and fees collected and licenses issued. The afternoon at the courthouse drew to a close with a presentation by Ottawa County Board of Elections director JoAnn Friar and deputy director Carol Ann Hill on the new congressional districts and being an informed voter.

The class then traveled to the Fountain Inn in Lakeside for dinner provided by Mary Ann Hirsch and further discussion of the class service project.
