Elliston native, American Idol finalist, songwriter and recording artist Crystal Bowersox and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur thanked volunteers and hosted a canvass kick off at the Obama For America’s Port Clinton office on Saturday afternoon.
The event was part of OFA’s “Women Decide 2012” initiative.
The Port Clinton stop was one of a half dozen stops in Northwest Ohio for Bowersox over the weekend. She told the group of more than 30 volunteers “We are all here for the same reason. My values are in line with those of President Obama, so I am here to support him and you.”
Congresswoman Kaptur also thanked those working for Obama’s reelection, “We appreciate you being here and walking for families who want to preserve the values and programs that support the middle class and that support good businesses who treat people well.”
Bowersox then sang Jewel’s “A Life Uncommon” and her own compositions “Holy Toledo” and “Home is the Place.” She said that though she now lives in Portland, Oregon, she considers Northwest Ohio “my home through and through, and I want to help.”
Bowersox and Kaptur signed autographs, posed for photographs, answered questions and visited with volunteers.
As Bowersox headed on to her next stop in Sandusky, energized volunteers gathered survey sheets to canvas Ottawa County neighborhoods on the cool October afternoon.
