Security guard honored for quick response
Category: Around Ottawa County Written by Angie Zam
Thanks to the fast action of a security staffer and the quick response of fire crews, the pavilion is still standing in Lakeside after a Valentine’s Day blaze.
Security guard Andy Larson said he was doing his final rounds Tuesday night when he saw flames coming out the door of the pavilion. He immediately jumped in his truck and called for help. The Lakeside Fire Department — later joined by crews from Marblehead and Catawba — was on scene in minutes.

Wildlife volunteers needed
Category: Around Ottawa County
Do you enjoy wildlife and helping people? Then you might consider volunteering at the Bird Center at Magee Marsh Wildlife Area near Oak Harbor. From March through November, volunteers help staff the Bird Center, work in the bookstore, help with programs, assist at special events and perform other tasks where needed or that highlights their own skills and interests.
Magee Marsh receives more than 150,000 visitors a year and our volunteers get to interact with folks from all over the world.
No need to worry if you know little about wildlife. You will learn as you go and a training session is provided. The main qualification to become a volunteer is a willingness to help people and a positive attitude. As long-time volunteer Marcia puts it, “I see volunteering as an opportunity to learn, observe and serve and it gives me satisfaction in participating in the preservation and protection of the marsh.”
If this sounds like something you might like to do, call Mary at 419-898-0960, No. 31, to find out more and to schedule a time to come in and go over the Volunteer Manual.
A training session for all volunteers, both new and returning volunteers, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10. This will include a pizza lunch and a walk through the day-to-day operations at the Bird Center and updates for the new year.
