Otterbein among 2014 “Best Nursing Homes”

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently praised a select group of long-term and post-acute care providers for being among the country’s “Best Nursing Homes”. On the list was the Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Community in Lakeside-Marblehead.

The 2014 rankings were published in the U.S. News & World Report. U.S. News determines its annual rankings through data collected from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The federal agency assigns each nursing center certified by the government a rating of one to five stars through its Five-Star Rating System. U.S. News names all those with a five-star rating a “Best Nursing Home.” For more information on how the rankings are determined, visit www.health.usnews.com/best-nursing-homes.

In the evaluation process, CMS creates a separate rating for each of the three major aspects of rigorous health inspections, staffing ratio and number of hours of care for each patient/resident, along with nine unique physical and clinical quality measures. The three ratings are combined and a star rating, from 1 to 5 stars, is assigned to each nursing home. Only those facilities with five overall stars are named the “Best Nursing Homes”.

Tom Keith, the Regional Executive Director of Otterbein’s North Shore Senior Lifestyle Community said, “Otterbein’s mission is to continually seek to enhance the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons. We are thrilled with the results and, more importantly, with the recognition that Otterbein provides an exceptional commitment to the quality care of our residents and patients. Otterbein will continue to strive for improvement as our dedicated staff focuses on person-centered care and quality best practices for quality of care.”

Otterbein Senior Lifestyle Choices is a faith-based non-profit health and human services ministry, serving over 3,300 people annually, and related to the East Ohio and West Ohio Conferences of the United Methodist Church. Otterbein has five full-service retirement communities, five skilled nursing and rehabilitation neighborhoods, a home health agency and hospice care.

Marblehead Bank supports Otterbein

After calling bingo and giving out prizes for Otterbein North Shore (ONS) residents, Marblehead Bank President Bill Tuttamore presented ONS with a donation allowing them to purchase a Vital Signs Monitor, also known as “Nurse on a Stick.” It combines into one compact unit several basic monitoring devices critical to patient care. Rather than having several pieces of equipment to carry, nurses will be able to check blood pressure, oxygen levels, pulse and oral temperature by using one singular unit that is easily transported via a stand with basket and wheels. Nurses will work much more efficiently with this impressive unit that is flexible, fast and accurate. Every resident will benefit from the use of this equipment; some monthly and some multiple times a day.

Otterbein North Shore and the Marblehead Bank have a long-standing partnership. The Bank has a satellite office on the ONS campus where residents can do their banking efficiently and conveniently.

Otterbein North Shore is a Continuum Care Retirement Community offering independent and assisted living, as well as short-term rehabilitation in the Jane Baker House. For more information call Jo Ann Franks or Kirsten Trammel at 419-798-8250. Additional information regarding Otterbein Retirement Living Communities is available on the website at www.otterbein.org.
