LEAP thank you

On behalf of United Way and Lake Erie Adventure Play, we would like to thank the graduating class of Leadership Ottawa County for their outstanding support of families and children in Ottawa County. On April 26 the LOC, under the leadership of Marcia Jess, sponsored a Pop Up Talent Show at the Elks Lodge to help raise funds for  a new United Way program, Lake Erie Adventure Play (LEAP). LEAP's mission is to provide child-directed play opportunities that foster innovative thinking, creative problem solving, and healthy risk taking for local children and families. Heartfelt thanks go out to LOC 2014: Amy Simkus, Andrew Wells, Becky Simpson, Dawn Segaard, Diane Ball, Kathy Berger, Kathy Dale, Kirsten Trammel, Laurie Cleaver, Steve Hall, Steve Lange and Vern Shepherd.

Summer Lunch and Fun begins June 17

After school is out, year four of the Summer Lunch & Fun Program begins. Lunch is being served for all school-aged children at three locations in Port Clinton at 11 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until Aug. 21. The locations are Lakeview Estates Community Room, Ida Rupp Public Library and Bay Meadows Community Room.  All children are welcome at any time during the summer. Registration happens on-site.

New this summer, Lake Erie Adventure Play, also known as Pop-Up Play, will be bringing their child directed play to the lunch sites. The play workers and volunteers will join us from noon until 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at one of the sites throughout the summer. Kids are encouraged to bring their imagination and sense of adventure with them to the site for safe and enriching play.

Last year more than one hundred community volunteers made this program a success. Groups of volunteers from clubs and workplaces met at Firelands Presbyterian Church at 9 a.m. on lunch day and put together healthy lunches. Community organizations and area restaurants contributed food and supplies. Other volunteers were on hand to pass out the lunches and participated with the children in enriching activities from clock making to tie dying. This year there is a greater emphasis on the FUN in Lunch and Fun with musical instruments being introduced at the sites by Mary Krejci from Immaculate Conception School.

This program is a community collaboration of area churches, Port Clinton City Schools, social service agencies, volunteers and donors.

If you are interested in lending a hand at a lunch site this summer, please call program coordinator Kristen Gerwin at 419-734-6645 to volunteer. Small groups of 4-5 individuals are also needed to pack lunches.
