Dear Editor,
This is the time when we think of making resolutions for a better new year. I would like to urge more citizens to become involved in volunteering for the benefit of our community.
Thirty years ago my first venture was mending clothing for the residents at Riverview Nursing Home and later went on to varied responsibilities because of the satisfaction it gives. My first (volunteered) service for church was at 16 day old when I was baby Jesus in the Christmas play. Maybe that preset my mental tape.
Lee Cuevas of Marblehead has expressed many times his frustration of the inability to get others to give of their abilities for a good cause. He serves at Immaculate Conception, is involved in taking care of the dinning room needs at the Men's Prayer Breakfast (Methodist Church), served on the advisory waster committee for Danbury Twp., donates school supplies for children at two sites, cuts grass and plows snow for a widowed neighbor and provides a complete Thanksgiving dinner for a needy family yearly, plus many other impromptu needs that arise.
The Bible asks, "Am I my brother's keeper?" If we look at the example of Christ and he said, "What you see me do, do likewise," we have to agree we are called to do this. Christ surely realized the ensuing blessings for all concerned. The rewards travel both ways. It gets us out of ourselves and into a meaningful contribution to society. We make new friends and find a special kind of joy because caring and responding to the call is part of our commandment to build the kingdom of God.
