Huron High School teachers Sarah Mizla and Tanny Vonthron were recently recognized as Firelands Hero Honorable Mention Award Winners by the American Red Cross. The brunch and awards ceremony was held on Saturday, March 1 at the Nia Center at Kalahari Resort They were nominated by a parent of a student for going above and beyond the call of duty when the student had a series of illnesses that kept her out of school for months. Each of them took a special interest in the student, spending time outside of class to be sure her studies did not suffer while she recuperated.
The student's mother said, "Miss Mizla brought a quiet presence and grace to her tutoring. "Sometimes the quiet professionals are overlooked because when someone does something so well and so effortlessly and does not make a lot of hoopla, it's easy to think that what they do is a piece of cake. She is incredible in helping my child feel at ease and successful by just being kind, quiet, listening and attentive." Meanwhile, "Ms. Vonthron has incredible stamina, energy, integrity, and passion for her job. She is our hero for helping us through a difficult illness and making education seem effortless."
