Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is pleased to announce that Marcus Hathaway will assume the role of Acting Superintendent starting in early May.  Midwest Regional Director Ernie Quintana recently made the announcement and was quick to add that, "This is a win-win situation for the park service - the park will benefit from Marcus' extensive experience with large construction projects, and the park service will benefit by giving an up-and-coming employee the opportunity to manage a full park operation."   Hathaway is looking forward to joining with the staff of Perry's Victory as they prepare to open the 317' high observation deck for the 2008 season.

For the last 6 years, Hathaway has been the Branch Chief responsible for managing the National Park Service's Planning and Construction funds in the Washington, D.C., Headquarters office.  His portfolio includes overseeing the funds for the Service's major capital improvement programs and serving as a standing member of the Service's Development Advisory Board.  Hathaway has been involved in hundreds of major capital projects throughout the country including constructing, expanding or repairing visitor centers, monuments, roads, and utilities as well as major storm recovery efforts such as repairs to park facilities damaged from Hurricane Katrina.  Prior to becoming Branch Chief, he managed the funding for the Service's Line Item Construction program for 2 years.  In addition to his two current assignments in Washington, the Massachusetts native has moved throughout the country in his over 30 years with the National Park Service.  Hathaway spent 13 years in Alaska; 6 years as the Chief of Administration at Denali National Park and Preserve, and 6 years as the Senior Budget Analyst in the Anchorage Regional Office.  Prior to moving to the "Last Frontier", he had assignments in the regional office in Boston, Ma, Timpanogos Cave National Monument in Utah, Big Bend National Park in Texas and the National Visitors Center and Mall Monuments in Washington, D.C.  He also spent a year working for the Small Business Administration in Los Angeles, Ca.

Hathaway and his wife Naomi currently reside in Reston, VA, with their two adorable adopted children from China: Olivia, who is seven, and Vanessa, who is five.  Naomi and the children plan to join Marcus at Perry's Victory as soon as the school year is out in early June.

The Monument's superintendent's position will be vacated upon the transfer of Andy Ferguson to Great Basin National Park in Nevada at the end of March. Facility Manager Jerry Cantu will be delegated to assume the acting responsibilities until Hathaway arrives.  The search for a new permanent superintendent may take several months and ultimately culminate in the selection of a new leader that will take the Monument through the next phase of repairs and restoration.  It is hoped that repairs can be affected in time for the bicentennial events involving the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie.  Also on the horizon are centennial celebrations surrounding the construction of the Monument (2012-15) and the birthday of the National Park Service (2016).
