Members of the Skittle Bunny Company were hard at work assembling baskets and learning about economics at Bataan Memorial. Pictured clockwise from bottom left are: Jose Albrego, Madison Hille, Hailey Ward, Morgan Bagovich and Olivia McDougall, students in Stephanie Kreilick's first grade class.
Bataan Memorial first grade students created their own company to help out Peter Cotton Tail making Easter baskets.  Students named their company The Skittle Bunny Company as part of a week long lesson focusing mainly on economics. Stephanie Kreilick had students use their skills in division and multiplication to figure out how many eggs and skittles to put in each basket to fill the orders.  They worked together in groups to figure the cost per order.  The assembly of the eggs included concepts such as producers and consumers as well as how people obtain goods and services that they do not produce.
Mrs. Kreilick said, "The lesson involved skills the children are learning in math such as counting and exchanging money as well as giving change.  At the end of the day, we again came together to assemble fully loaded baskets for each child to take home."  Children worked to assemble the baskets in an assembly line, each with their own task and placing the pre-determined number of goods in each basket.
Mrs. Mary Kozlok's second grade class also came to help with the task as the competitor, "Kozlok Co."  producing M&M eggs!  Actually, the additional company also provided an opportunity for the children to learn about consumers since the children bought each others baskets.
Even though this lesson kept them hopping, students were very excited about their finished baskets at the end of the day...and learned a little about economics as well.
