We all know that April 15 is on its way.
And if you are feeling a little behind or uncertain and need help to file income taxes and get the Economic Stimulus Payment, there is help.
"It's absolutely free," said Peggy Sneider, Administrative Assistant, Ottawa County United Way This Saturday, March 29, the United Way is offering to prepare income tax for people of any age with middle to low incomes. The goal of the United Way is to make sure people file their taxes, even if they don't normally file, and get their stimulus payment from the government.
Five or six people who are certified in basic tax preparation will be available at the office in Sutton Center, 1854 E. Perry Street, Suite 300, Port Clinton, from 9 a.m. to Noon to fill out the tax papers. Individuals need to call for an appointment at 419-734-6645. "We are scheduling an hour for each appointment, but it may only take a half an hour to 45 minutes," Sneider said. "This is the first year that the United Way has offered this service, and we hope to continue it next year."
The service is not available to those who itemize. They will be referred somewhere else.
There is a list of items to bring to the appointment. Those include: a photo ID, drivers license, social security card for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents, birthdays of everyone involved, your current year tax package including any wages, W2, W2G, 1099R, interest and dividend statements, copy of last year's federal and state return forms, bank routing numbers if you want direct deposit of a refund and the total paid for day care and the provider's tax ID number. If filing married, both people need to be present to sign.
The Internal Revenue Service will begin sending more than 130 million economic stimulus payments starting May 2 with the initial round of weekly payments completed by early July. The IRS expects to make about 34 million payments within the first three weeks after the payment schedule begins on May 2. With more than 130 million households expected to receive stimulus payments, more than 25 percent of the payments will be made in the first three weeks.
