I am pleased to be contributing another article in a series written by Marblehead village officials. I am the Vice Chairman of the Planning Commission for the Village of Marblehead. My position on the Planning Commission is an appointed, rather than elected one. After I responded to an advertisement of the open position in the Peninsula News, Mayor Jacqueline Bird appointed me. Subsequently, the Commission elected me to serve as Vice-Chairman. I have lived in the area for about five years, and have come to love small-town living and "The Rock". I enjoy being a part of the processes that govern the development and uses of property in the village. On a personal note, I am a software engineer with 25 years experience and work out of a home office.
Although some of you are aware of the role and the responsibilities of the Planning Commission, there are probably many among you who are not. We are a commission of five members. By Ohio statute, we consist of the Mayor (Jackie Bird), one member of the Village Council (Danis Putzbach), and three citizens of the village (Hal Clagg, Richard "Corky" Zembala and myself). Hal Clagg serves as the Chairman. As provided by Ohio law, we all serve without compensation. Our commission also serves in the capacity of the Board of Zoning or Building Appeals. Bob Hruska is the Village's Zoning Inspector, and serves as the secretary to the commission. We have powers and duties related to the establishment and enforcement of rules governing the use of property in the village. The Ohio Revised Code contains the specifics of all of that in Chapter 713: Planning Commissions. It can be accessed on-line at http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/713. Subsequent sections outline in escalating detail what we as a commission are responsible for and how we go about it.
Our meetings are open to the public and are held in the Fire Hall on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. If you are interested in what is going on in the village, this is the place to be. We actively welcome public comments during the discussion of topics before our committee. If you have something worthwhile to contribute, we want to hear it. With your input and involvement, we can make sound decisions to ensure the Village of Marblehead is a nice place to visit and an even better place to live.
