Dear Editor,
THEY ARE BACK! No, not the buzzards to Hinckley, OH. This is a different type of vulture. Its cry is the sound of a chainsaw; its prey is trees; its destruction can be seen in the form of deformed trees along the south side of State Road traveling eastward from the Port Clinton city limits.
The culprit? It's the Nelson Tree Service, a subcontractor and agent of the Ohio Edison Co.
The vulture-Nelson first appeared in 2004 shortly after the year of the massive First Energy (Ohio Edison Co.) power outage/blackout in the Cleveland area. That year the vulture-Nelson cut down more than a dozen trees at ground level in my back lot that posed little threat to a 22 foot high overhead branch electric line securing the cable TV station. For some unknown reason they left two similarly oriented trees. And there was no clean-up of the debris!
The vulture-Nelson returned on January 12, 2008. While further trimming a tree in the State Road right-of-way, a second truck pulled into the area where the two remaining trees of 2004 were located, did nothing and departed after a few minutes. Perhaps it was too cold and windy out to "trim"!
Note: Despite my requests for a detailed written standard operating procedure on "trimming", all I received was a half-hearted verbal reply that, "We trim 10 to 15 feet away from the power line."
