Wildlife crop damage is widespread and relatively costly.  As a result, it can be a serious concern to producers.  Economic losses to due to wildlife related damage to agricultural producers (farmers and ranchers) exceeds 4.5 billion dollars annually in the United States. Damage can come from a wide variety of critters from Blackbirds, and Canada Geese, to Ground Hogs, Raccoons, and White-tailed deer. Proper identification of the species responsible for crop damage is vitally important so that landowners can implement proper management strategies if they choose to do so.
There are many techniques that can be used to help deter the damage.   If you are a landowner or a farmer in Ottawa County and have crop damage occurring you can contact Joe Uhinck (419-898-1595) at the Ottawa County Soil and Water Conservation District for more information.  Joe can assist you in applying for a damage permit through the Division of Wildlife or give you various ways to help reduce crop damage.
