Dear Editor:
I was born and raised in Port Clinton, and I lived there for forty years, and I'll always consider it my home.
Whenever I come back to visit I feel a touch of sadness as I drive on streets as rough as plowed fields - or when I look at the ball diamonds - tennis courts - and the beautiful Waterworks Park that will soon be taken away from the people of Port Clinton and given to a handful of money-loving business people - or when I look for old friends that I grew up with, who were driven out of Port Clinton to look for jobs they could survive on.
Yes, it is sad to know that Port Clinton is my home, but I'll never be able to live there because the only jobs available are the jobs created by the tourists, that pays starvation wages.
And you parents who have children in school, it must be very sad to know that they will also be forced to leave home when they graduate because there will never be any jobs but tourist jobs in a tourist town, and as sad as it is - Port Clinton is a tourist town.
In the coming years it will be nearly impossible to find a Port Clinton resident who was born there, because the money-hungry businesses will keep coming to Port Clinton, and along with the city administration, will continue to cry for more and more tourist until the administration gets what they have been after from the very start - sky-rocketing property taxes - and this will be more than the retired citizens can handle.
Yes, it is sad to see a beautiful little town like Port Clinton end up a pitiful tourist town.
The citizens must get involved if they want to save their town. Good luck.
